thinking a two speed rear end would be cool to have for highway cruising. i remember my uncle had one on his mid 90's cummins. made it a dream to do 70-75 on the freeway. anyone have one? know how much they cost?

I've read about them before. I think they were around in the 50's or 60's or something.

A lot of folks with the US gear/ doug nash auxiliary boxes have the little red button. It makes it behave like a 2 speed rear.

I have seen a few old I-H 1-tons that came factory-original with a 2-speed rear, vacuum-operated.

2-speed rears are always going out and giving trouble.

They usually quit in such a way that the axle is in neither speed and therefore will not drive the wheels; this is somewhat disconcerting, especially when climbing a bad hill; once she quits pulling, the only way to go is down --- backwards.

My dad had an old bus that was converted to an RV. It had a 2 speed rear and for the nearly 20 years he had it never gave a lick of trouble.
