So after my really embarrassing stupid oil line mistake I went ahead and bought a reman center section from garrett. Mine may be rebuildable but just the turbine shaft, compressor wheel and rebuild kit was $340. For $200 more it came ready to install. I ordered it on the day after my problem and had it 2 days later. I installed it the next evening. That was 10 days ago.

It has been running great since then. I have driven it about 500 miles with no issues. 150 of them pulling our horse trailer. It is a huge improvement when towing.

I just installed my boost gauge yesterday so I don't have any idea of how much boost it's making but will find out tomorrow when I pull my tractor in for some work. I got it to 1 psi pulling the gooseneck from the barn to the shop.

I have not turned the pump up yet. My IP has been acting normally ever since the one time the truck wouldn't start hot. As such I am still going to save the moose pump for later.

Well I just thought I'd let ya'll know how things turned out in case you were curious.

Hmm.....I actually pull a bit of vacuum when I rev mine in park or neutral. I guess thats what they call "turbo lag"LOL

I bet mind does that slightly when I rev it but not that high. I only see the 1-2psi when I rev it WOT to goverened rpm. Then as I let off, thats when it makes the boost.

Well today I pulled the tractor in for work. Here are the results.

Trailer with tractor on it weighs about 8k.

The roads around here are all short grades but fairly steep through rolling hills. On most of them full throttle in 3rd (O.D. off) I was seeing 5 psi of boost. I could not maintain speed and would slowly loose ground for the duration of the climb. Egt's were over 1000* during the steepest of the climbs. This is certainly an improvement over the trucks' performance NA where speed was controlled by backing out of the throttle to keep the egt's below 1200*

My IP is not turned up at all.

On my way home, without the tractor, but still pulling the trailer I had to climb "The Hill".(1.1 miles starts at 6% gets steeper at the top) I was running about 70 and pulling it well until a Prius doing 50 cut me off hard. I had to slam on the brakes and lost my momentum. It put me in a torque deficient rev range and I was only able to get back up to about 55 in 2nd gear by time I reached the top of the hill. Egt'***** 1050 and 5 lbs of boost again. I feel like I could have pulled it in 3rd if I hadn't been forced to slow down near the bottom.

I should mention I have 3.55 gears and near 35" tires so I haven't got the greatest pulling setup.

I have stated I was saving the Moose pump for my next motor but have decided to install it on this one as my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

One question for the rest of you turbo guys. When you turned your pumps up did the boost set in earlier in the rev range or do you just see more boost up top? I feel getting the boost earlier would be a big improvement in pulling ability. I am sure the Moose pump addresses this issue on some level due to the different timing curve.

my truck was making boost but not much more power until i cranked up the fuel. i went two flats and called it good. i have a slight grey haze when i am on it and the EGT's stay under control so i am happy. i havent pulled anything more than a utility trailer with my truck though, most of what i use the truck for hauling wise can fit in the bed.

is it a wastegated turbo? if so maybe try shortening up the rod, it will build more boost and sooner.
oh yea and congrats on getting it all put togather!

Sounds like you need to adjust your wastegate some for some more boost ;Sweet.

My truck boost pretty good down low, but it lays a lot of black smoke until it spools (then light black/grey haze out the tailpipe). In 4th gear at 1100rpms I can go WOT and have 8psi by 2000rpm's, and have around 3-4psi by 1500rpm's. My truck wont really boost below 12-1300rpm's in the higher gears, in 1st and 2nd it does though.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is my non-wastegated turboed beast, NO boost at all down low, tons of coal coming out the pipe then at about 2000rpm's the boost starts coming on slow, by the time I hit the governor at 3500rpm's (according to tach) I have 10-12lbs of boost empty and 15-16 loaded and at this engine speed there is a haze of black behind me. No idea on egt's, still haven't got my thermocouple fixed, also don't ask me how much it's turned up, I didn't count flats I just turned the screw a bit (OK a bunch) and it's been this way for 2 years now with no meltdown:hail.

My motor with the Moose pump would make boost really low in the rpm range and I could hit 15 lbs easily but... The pyro followed very closely to the boost. Plenty of thick black smoke too. I have turned down my pump almost one full turn. It runs like a scauded dawg.... Much faster than a striped ass ape.. I really need to install my Hypermax intercooler so I can once again see the full potential of the Moose pump. I know... Too many toys is very boring...:D
