Haveing never put a turbo on a diesel but numerous on gassers i figured id ask before trying this so my question is if i could get a wastegated turbo that i could dial in to not produce to much boost to blow out my head gaskets could i just fab up the exhaust, intake, and boost pipes. IF possible what about the oil line

Welcome to the basement, there is already turbos for our trucks like Hypermax, ATS and Banks. You can have it new or used sometimes from ebay and the like. I think Mel (agnem) have a install for a hypermax but I don't see it on the archives which btw You may want to check later for more info.

The oil line on mine connects down on the back of the block on the drivers side, near the oil filter.
The most boost ran comfortably here is about 12psi. And these big engines suck a lot of air, I do not know CFM but someone will. If you can fab it up, and have a turbo laying around, I would give it a shot.

I have spent many hours reading the old posts and have found just as many articles saying that you can doit and have done it as saying it is impossible i was just a little confused i do have a couple of turbos laying around and the ability to do the fab work i was just wondering what kind of helpful input i could get from the local gearheads here

Sure, any turbo that will fit on will work, as long as it is big enough to handle the volume of air these engines move.

Basically there are 2 types of turbo's for these trucks. The wastegated and non wastegated.

The non wastegated turbo has all the exhaust pass through the turbine housing, and the spinning turbo wheel is sized accordingly to limit the amount of boost on our applications. These units produce decent power, and increase economy on the hwy. The downside is these units take quite a while to spool up, so have noticeable turbo lag, and only usually high boost at higher rpms. The newer Hypermax units are much better than the older banks and ATS units.

The wastegated turbo wheel is sized much smaller, so it spins up faster and produces nearly instant boost, but can overboost these idi engines real fast so, a wastegate is incorporated to "dump" the excess boost to prevent damage. The result is quick no lag power, but the downside is loss of efficiency and higher backpressures.

So, if you can fab up a turbo, and you have one that will move enough air to keep up with the 6.9/7.3, then it will work. If you use one off a powerstroke or something similar,(it has been done) you will need to limit the boost.

I highly recommend though that whatever you do, you must have a pyrometer in the exhaust as it is really easy to overheat our engines and have a meltdown!

I say, if you have the skills and tools, go for it!!

Byrd,

I put a Hypermax non-wastegate turbo kit on my rig and really brought it to life. I get 12psi boost and it pulls like a mule (-:

Probably the toughest part of scratch building a turbo kit will be designing a good mount for it. My kit has a cast steel mount that bolts to the back of the right head and the turbo mounts to it. The exhaust pipes tee together and one pipe goes up to the turbo mount. Oil for the turbo comes from a tee fitting at the oil pressure sender at the rear center of the block. Oil out of the turbo goes down through a opening in the valley pan that was for the CDR. The CDR gets moved to the turbo inlet tube and draws from a new hole in the rear of the left valve cover.

Take a look at the Hypermax web site and you may be able to figure some of it out from their pictures.

Or spend about $1700.00 and buy their kit.

Inflation. With the price of fuel and everything, it's all more expensive. Still a good value.
