turbo IDI starting issues

I just bought diesel #2. The first one is a NA IDI and I've had it long enough to experience glow plug issues and easy cold starts down to -15F (unplugged). I've learned one dead battery or slow cranking means no-go.

This new one is my first turbo IDI, the glow plug relay was smashed and hotwired so I replaced it with a spare/used. The spare worked on my NA engine when I tested it, no problems. On this new truck it does not keep the wait to start light on. Instead it just sets into the "clicking" cycle. The truck will not start even after two cycles (it's been 95F in the shade here all day, down to 80F when I tried starting it). I did get it running, but I had to give it a little throttle to make it fire. Once running it's fine.

Now - Is the wait to start timer inside the box on the valve cover or in the dash? And is the no start without throttle pedal related, a separate issue, or a symptom of the glow plug relay issue?

The timer is in the controller and it's either that or one or more of the glow plugs are bad (may be from doing it manually and too long).

Like genlightning says, if someone was running it manually, they probably fried the glow plugs. The controller wont run long enough when plugs are burned out.
That truck should start just fine at 80 degrees, timing might be a little retarded.

I'm not surprised at the answers. The seller monkeyed with everything. I was told the pump was turned up 6 flats, the wastegate linkage shortened (or lengthened - whatever delays it's release), who knows what else. It's belching black smoke and the fan belt can't keep up with the acceleration when I goose it. It seems more like a wild animal vs my NA truck. I just want it to start like the other one - instantly. So I should check the glowplugs (that he just replaced) and then call Navistar for a timing tune-up. Do motorcrafts short out when burned up or fail open?

Let me ask you this too, is turning up the pump +1/2 throttle the same as stock pump settings and full throttle? Because I drive with a very light foot, with the NA I get 22-24mpg at 55mph. I don't think I've ever floored it. If turning up the pump just means the pedal doesn't have to move as far I think I should go back to stock.

Replaced four glow plugs. I am very lucky, it was the front four. The rear four (two under the turbo out of reach) were ok. Started up but now I see that the solenoid that kicks the idle up when cold is not touching the throttle lever even when engage. It's at least an inch too far away. Something isn't right there. So the truck started up at the low speed idle. Sounds cool lugging and stumbling, but I bet it will be an issue when it gets cold out.

Check the solenoid bracket for both bolts. Then loosen them just a bit and move the bracket towards the firewall. It will only move around 1/4 inch. Then you need to use a 1/4 inch socket on the hex to adjust the rod so it touches the throttle stop. Its really easy...

runs good, dont it?take it for a ride down the street and youll see y i didnt want to sell it.all 8 glowplugs are only 3 months old.take the wastegate actuator off like i told you and turn the rod untill the drill marks line up and youll be back to stock boost.the guys here can give you the stock setting for the fuel screws.yes it has 2.it MUST have gauges installed and boost/fuel adjusted to keep it in the safe ranges.i cant stress the gauges enough!!!even when returned to factory settings it should still have gauges installed.my last turbo IDI would hit 1300 degrees in no tgime empty.

had i gotten what i wanted for it,it wouldve been running and driving before it hit your driveway.

at 80 degrees it shouldn't even need the glowplugs. I think you have a different problem

Fired up on the first turn today after a full length glow plug cycle. Runs crappy cold, very lumpy even with my foot simulating the cold idle solenoid position. I'm guessing it was only firing on 7 for 1-2 minutes. Smoothed out after that.

I moved the bracket, got that 1/4 out of it - still not enough. The solenoid does not appear to be adjustable but I didn't fiddle with it very long. It felt weak so it will get replaced and I'll fight with it again later.

We're making progress!

The lumpy idle may be air in the lines. Keep in mind the fast idle solenoid won't open the throttle, it only holds it open after you press the throttle down.

If you aren't working it too hard and have as light a foot as you say you probably won't burn anything up but you really need a boost and pyro gauge. I'd say 1050 is probably a safe maximum in the ATS stock location if it's similar to my 088 which has it on the hot side but far from the manifolds in the up-pipe. Boost should probably stay under 15 with stock bolts and no IC. I have my fuel halfway between stok settings and maxed out. I like it there. If I had a smoke puff limiter I would turn it all the way up and drive by the gauges. As it is I usually just try not to smoke people out too much. I can ht 800-900 in the ATS location briefly but as soon as that turbo gives it some air the pyro drops quickly to a sustained 600-700 on the highway and 300-500 in town. If I was working it hard I imagine I could see 1000 or so easy.
