Need to know if my transmission is in need of replacement, parts, or its still OK to use. The front input shaft can freely slide in and out completely, recently discovered a small chunk of the outer sleeve broke off. Is this something fixable? When I slide the shaft back in it seems to spin fine. It broke when I was putting in my newly rebuilt 7.3 idi. The tranny is a c6.

Well seeing this is a C6 I'm betting any trans shop will have one for you. This is a very common trans used in many Ford and mercs over the past 40+ years. Something is telling me you got in a bind when this broke. Never try to remove the trans by the torque converter. Putting stress on that will break things. Also never remove the engine with the torque converter still attached to it either. Trying to pull the converter off the shaft is dangerous to the front pump.

Yes. Wish I had known that the first time I pulled an engine. Ended up having to junk the truck because I broke the pump right off the front of the transmissions, and nobody has spare JATCO pumps laying around.

Yeah I won't forget that little rule again haha I'm used to 50's gas engines....much simpler than a diesel. Thanks for the input. And it broke when I was putting it back in. Hopefully I can pull the pump out ok. Is their a tool anyone knows about for that, or just two bolts and some muscle?

Before you pull that pump tighten down the front band. (It's externally adjusted) If you don't that C6 will have a chance to spill its guts when the pump is removed. Tightening the band clamps them in place.

Yeah one of my friends said that, I just got it out okay, so I guess I need to go to a shop and try to find a new part

And I'm assuming the top half is the pump? Or just part of it? Can I get just a new shaft?

The whole thing is the pump. C6 pumps are cheap. You can find them on evilbay or visit your local tranny shop. They can hook you up.

Welcome to the forum. You post is very confusing to me. What was rebuilt 5000 miles ago. A C6 trans needs vacuum to operate properly too. The vacuum switch in located on the injection pump and its adjustable too. If the C6 trans was rebuilt 5000 miles ago I suggest you take it back.
