Tipping your mechanic....

It was a first for me but I got a $20 tip today from a private customer (Gary)with a motorhome.. ..I did some work to his rig, he was pleased with my work I guess because he asked Brian (my service manager) if it was ok that he give me $20 as a thank-you...Brian told him he could tip any tech if he was happy with the service he received. He came out and tried to give it to me, I wouldn't take it but he insisted, then Brian comes out when he's gone and say's..."It pay's to give good customer service doesn't it"....I was going to tell him after Gary left as it didn't seem right to take the money from a customer but he already knew....All good to happen in front of your service manager huh?

All in all a good day on the creeper, made an extra $20 cash and I think I finally fixed a troublesome Eaton GEN-II automated 18spd tranny that everyone else had a go at....Off to a 2 day course out of town tommorow for GEN-III Eaton automated transmission training.

Where I work I am not allowed to take cash. Always get people trying to buy their and their friends way to the front of the line or into the bar when they are too drunk.

Had a guy offer 1G the other day to get in....was too drunk
Have had offers of 500 to get in when too drunk
often get attempts to grease me for 40 bucks too....when will they learn
First come First in, No coin changes that...lol

Your too honest, I would take every penny......Let them in and then boot them out for being too drunk...

That's good stuff. I've been tipped by quite a few customers when they saw me torquing lugnuts with a torque wrench instead of simply cranking them on with an impact wrench I was doing tires years ago.

The customer obviously saw something he liked and respected about your work ethic. Good job.

I was surprised but as long as he was happy that's what counts...I didn't do anything out of the ordinary either...Eaton automation.....Drives great when they are working, pure poison to work on when they are not. Hard to access.

I have a couple customers that tip me everytime that there in. They are good customers anyway. In fact if any of the customers should tip its not them. The customers that are a pain in the rear should tip, they are the kind that if you paid them to work on there stuff they would still think it cost to much. You might spend 4 or 5 hours diagnosing there problem to find it is an hour fix and that is all you could get paid for. Any ways just busted knuckles and headaches.

I'll tip a mechanic if he/she does more than
what's been expected of them. Such as....

You might spend 4 or 5 hours diagnosing there problem to find it is an hour fix and that is all you could get paid for.

One reason mechanics don't get tips more often is

A waitress doesn't come out after your done with a meal and hand you a bill for three times the amount on the menu.

A pat on the back literally or monatarily is nice no matter what your occupation. A well timed thank you can really make a persons day.

Congratulations! Nice to be appreciated. I used to tip my inspection mechanic. I did it a few years in a row, and then they asked me to stop. I guess I never thought about how that might be percieved politically. It would appear that I was paying off somebody to pass the truck, but in reality, it was new, so it wasn't like there could possibly be anything wrong with it.

Well if they have those kind of Really Big wallets, then I sometimes move em right to the front of the line, asking (read telling) the guys in the line that they will be letting these people in first of course....

Roland you must be going to the wrong shop. We very seldom do over the estimate by$30 If we do we will call before doing the work. Half of our customers have been doing business with us so long that they just want it fixed they don't ask for or want an estimate they know we will treat them right.
