Besides towing, Does it help with fuel mileage is it justifiable to spend that kinda change? The Holley fuel injection system I put on my truck was suppose to give me 20% better mileage but didnt do jack for the money spent on the system.

You must be combining 2 different trucks in your story, as there is no Holley fuel injection system on our trucks, lol.

Turbos are great for towing, racing, the noise they make and on and on.;Sweet

All the big three turbo makers do a fine job of giving these engines more power and better fuel econmy. More hp means less throttle to make it move down the road. What a turbo does is force more air for proper burn of the fuel going into the engines. A diesel is never run lean like a gas engine can be. We have an open intake hole that sucks in as much plain air as it can. Then a smal amount of diesel is injected. The more power you want the more fuel gets injected. These diesel engines are so simple we can run them without any intake manifold and on any fuel that burns. Motor oil... Waste vegatable oil... heating oil or jet fuel. They are the real dooms day engine.

My mileage after turbo and after intercooler has not changed at all. But I can drive WAY faster loaded. I am betting if I went over all the hills at 25-35mph instead of 65-75 my mileage might have improved.

The added speed helps to keep your marbles in tact. Beating your head against a wall and seeing a shrink can get pretty expensive.LOL Seriously though, if your going any faster than 15 mph, you will appreciate a turbo. A turbo can actually help to lower your egt's also if you tow, haul or drive in mountainous areas. Na engines get hot real fast when you turn up the fuel.

;Sweet

Is it worth it for a daily driver since Im in the preplanning stages of this, I only tow something about every 3 years, Normal driving speed around 50mph in the flats, But I do carry about 700lbs of tools in my truck...Id like to do all the "Fuel" alternatives

I did read that post (somewhere)about a turbo making it run cooler.

get rid of the truck if you only tow once every three years. fuel prices are fixin to really suck and with that little towing you would be money ahead in fuel if you bought a car and paid someone to tow something for you every three years

"There is no excuse for a naturally aspirated diesel."

170 hp flywheel to 255 hp flywheel. 315 lbs-ft torque to 550 lbs-ft (6.9L stock specs shown, 7.3 a little higher). What's not to like? In my case, I saw an immediate 1-2 mpg increase, more when towing or hauling (stock mpg towing vs with the turbo).

If you used moderate fuel settings, yes, it could run cooler. I didn't do this on my 6.9 but I gradually built up a GM 6.2 for a story. I started with the usual exhaust and intake mods without a turbo but started with an EGT gauge. I was gobsmacked at how high the EGT a stock engine could get climbing a mountain pass. With a free flow exhaust and intake mods, it went down considerably and power went up a bit. After installing the turbo, with the pump set at the economy or "emissions" setting, EGT dropped a LOT. When I turned the pump up to the power setting, EGT came up but only when I was really wailing on it did it ever go as high as the stock engine did when being wailed on. Power output was about doubled. My 6.2 Blazer made about 94 hp at the rear wheels the way I got it, NA stock with 100K miles, 105 after a new pump & injectors, 134 with the exhaust and intake mods (a Banks Stinger kit) and 175 with a turbo. All these numbers were taken at a dyno facility at Denver, which is 5200 feet. Sea level numbers are a little higher in all cases. (you can still see this buildup from the '90s on the Four Wheel Magazine site: <www.fourwheeler.com/projectbuild/chevrolet_blazer_diesel_banks_sidewinder_turbo_kit/index.html>

Still, it 's a big chunk of change to add a turbo. It only pays if you need it. A lightly used truck at sea level has less need than a high altitude truck or one that works hard. If you were going to die in this truck (from old age, I mean ( : < ), then you could justify the cost but if this old IDI is just a step on the pickup ladder for you, then don't bother. Make sure your pump and injectors are 100 percent. Maybe some exhaust mods, a free flow, cool air intake and run her.

"Want" is a different issue. I don't think anyone wouldn't want a turbocharged 6.9 or 7.3.

Thanks Jim, Yes I will have this truck a long time love my old Fords just hate the gas burner mileage, I am new to the (soon to be) diesel pickup with all the PS and Cummins running around with the turbos was the main reason for asking if it was just a power issue or it had something to do with the fuel mileage.

nice read with real world testing back 19 years ago.:)

http://www.bankspower.com/magazines/show/486-Banks-Sidewinder-Turbo

i bought and am about to instal a used banks sidewinder for 100% fuel economy gain reasons alone.
i will still be driving 45mph max average speeds (sometimes 50-55) and i will still back off her once i know im getting up the hill and let speed fall off a bit like i do now.
granted,it might take me a couple tanks to "check things out" first though.:D
