This is on my 97 PSD

Started out with a grinding noise only in P R D 2 or 1. No noise in neutral.

Now I've got a horribly loud grinding noise in all gears, so loud that I am thinking it is eternal to the transmission or torque converter. So I am thinking flex plate?

The truck drives and shifts fine, although I'm not driving it anymore until I figure out what that noise is.

If I pull the inspection cover will I be able to see most of the flex plate while rotating the engine by hand?

If the flexplate has cracked beyond the crank bolts, you should be able to see that from the engine side with the inspection cover removed. I recently had the cover off on my truck. It takes only a few minutes and is three 7/16" bolts IIRC. I have to replace the flexplate on my truck very soon as the ring gear has a worn spot in it where the starter won't engage. It gets old having the crawl under the truck and put a breaker bar and socket on the crank snout and turn the engine past the dead spot so the truck will start.

I looked removed the inspection plate and there are no cracks beyond the crank bolts.
