so it looks like i am going to buy the truck after all. The tachometer does not work and i would like it to - supposedly when the engine gets hot it works intermittently but that doesn't cut it for me.
for a 89 f250, where should i start in troubleshooting it? i don't even know where on the engine or trans the tach cable connects, plus i don't know if it is the gauge on the dash that is broke or something else.
any suggestions as to where to start and where a good place to get the parts would be?
thanks,
paul

more than likely its the sender. It'll be in the IP gear housing, on the drivers side. Looks like a bolt with wires coming out of it.
They are common to fail and are like $60 from Ford.

sender. I replaced one this year for $58.95

Big bolt on top of the IP. When you put the new one in I found that it helped to twist the wires first so that they untwisted as I screwed it in (youll understand when you get started on it)

Part number should be

E5TZ-17B384-A

Check the connections around the base. Sometimes they get a bit worn and frayed and 'connect' to one another. There is a test for it but I don't have it available right now.
