Will it have to be a diesel tach or will an autometer from a gasser work?

I'm adding a tach, too, and after pricing all the available options I decided to go OEM. The sensors are $75 from the dealer$hip and then you have to find an instrument cluster with a tach...common as hen's teeth for 83-86 diesels. 
But I just bought this today, and I'll be hacking it into my existing cluster. Either that, or I'll make a housing and dash-mount it. Total cost: $108
Or, you can get a MiniTach...costs a bit more and I don't like the LCD display idea. That was my second option, chose OEM. Not sure what others here have done.

isspro makes a 4000 rpm tach
autometer makes a 5000 and 6000 rpm

i was looking at the auto meter and i think iam gona get that cuz i might make a custom aluminum dash....

Saw a dash with a diesel tach in it on Ebay few months back, guy wanted $150.00 or so - I offered $20.00 and got it. Now I have a spare dash without a diesel tach
Removed my column mounted Autometer which was never accurate anyway - was keyed off the alternator.
