Yes

For an E4OD transmission, the "transmission control box" MUST have a flawless signal from the tach sensor in the IP Gear cover, next to the oil fill, and from the VSS, (depending on the year and 2wd or 4x4) on the transmission, transfer case, or rear diff. (on the newer trucks it is on the rear diff, that is where mine is (03). Do not drive it until you get the issue fixed. If you continue to drive it this way (it is currently in limp mode) you WILL destroy the transmission. THis is to get you off the road somewhere safe, not to drive on..... Once you have the tach working again, it should return to normal.

The above is so true. Limp home mode is to get you of the road and not across the country. Remove the sender and clean it off. Sometimes they pick up metals and stop working. Just wash the pickup off and retry it. If it works please buy another sender. They are a very needed item. A spare is a good idea too...

nope no one i know has one of these diesels, i just hope its another faulty sensor and not something else serious.... ive got that sensor in my rear diff to but is that not for the abs? that wouldnt cause the tach to stop working? its the tach sensor on the inj pump that only controls the tach correct?

ok so im bout ready to give up a new tach sensor is about 4days away. i tried a buddies in mine and no good, it was unplugged in his truck he said his has never worked, its a manual though so hes safe, so i tried the two sensors i had in his truck and nothin works, so i tried his in mine nothing so thats a total of 3 tach sensors with no go! i guess im left currious till my new one gets here. and i have my fingers crossed thats the problem and not something else, but its just odd every sensor i try is garbage you think one would at least work.

It's damn hard to tell you something about a truck when you don't have it in your signature. It makes a difference on what year it is as to where the MLPS or the VSS is. If you got that kind of voltage out of the tach sensor it's not bad. Now is the speedometer working? Could be wires shorted out when you plug the tach sensor in. More info needed about the truck.

its a 1992 7th month model f250, 7.3L E4OD with 4.10's the speedometer works fine along with all the other gauges, the trans od off light is illuminated constintly, i replaced the tach sensor with a brand new oem ford one tonight and it still doesnt work, the mlps or the vss shouldnt stop my tach from working correct.... but if you need info let me know thanks for your help and OLDBULL8 ill add this to my sig later this evening like you say its hard to say about what the truck is. but thanks hey.
