Which is which???

i have an opportunity of picking up an 80 f150 with the 300 and the 4 speed. i was thinking of taking out all the parts for the 4 speed to convert to my diesel when the E40D craps out.

the only problem i have with it is that whole 1:1 thing as a final gear, not the best for mileage, but will pull a house!

Either one will work, but you need a diesel bellhousing. The F150 will have the T18 probably with the mechanical linkage.

t-18 will have a 6.69 first gear and is first is not syncroed.
t-19 is fully syncromeshed and has something around a 4 to 1 first gear

actaully its a good chance its a NP435, basically the same as a T-18 with a slightly lower first gear 7.xx : 1. physically there is only about a 1/4" differance in length between it and a T-18/19 case with the same bolt patterns front and rear so they are interchangable.

you can tell if it has an aluminum top its a NP435, if its cast steel its a T-18/19.

personally i would probubly prefer the 435, they are just as strong or stronger as the 18/19 with a better first gear.

my 81 parts truck has a mechanical linkage if tha helps.....and you will just need to find a diesel 4 speed bell housing and use that linkage.

The correct trans is the T-19B which has the best gear ratios out of the 3 that will fit. I'd forgo the T-18 and look for a 19B. A 19A or just plain 19, is the same as a T-18 but with the syncro first.

and when im looking at the truck, what will tell me what tranny is in it....or came with it assuming it wasnt switched...vin? door sticker? will it actually say it on the trans?

also where do i find the bell housing?

sorry guys, big mistake that might make a difference, the truck is a 250!

How do you tell if its a T18, T19, T19A or T19B?
I have a NP trans in my daily driver, and a Borg Warner in my low mile truck. My grandpas has a T19 in it, and Im selling my Warner to my brother to use the internals in grandpas T19, but now Im wondering if its the same tranny.
Im putting a ZF5 in place of the Warner.

I've researched this to death and Ford didn't follow any hard or fast rules.

The switch to hydro clutches was '83.

Basicly the 19 was used with diesels 'till '87 when they all switched to the ZF S5-42.

The 18 was used from the mid 80s until up to '92 with gassers.

"most" 70s and early 80s gassers got the NP-435.

The non synchro first 18 just means she'll grind unless ya stop or double clutch.

Also the trans with the very low first gears are unsynchronized, this is to keep you from downshifting into first at speed and spitting out your driveshaft.
