About that GP tip in the head. Bring that cyl. piston up to TDC, it will probably jam, back it off a tiny bit, remove the injector, try to fish the tip out with a magnet. Damn, such luck. Autolite's are known to do that, suggest only Beru GP's.

EDIT: The engine rotates in a clockwise direction as seen from the front of the truck, and for every 1/4 turn of the engine(crank) each next piston will arrive at TDC. So, When the line on the vibration damper is at the 2 oclock position, cylinders 2 and 5 will be at TDC. When the mark is at the 5 oclock position, cylinders 7 and 6 will be at TDC, 8 oclock has cylinders 3 and 8 at TDC, and back to 11oclock, 1 and 4 will be at TDC.

Cylinder numbers are assigned 1,3,5,7 on the left (passenger USA) bank from front of truck to back, and 2,4,6,8 on the driver's side (USA), front to back. Firing order is 1,2,7,3,4,5,6,8.

so the tips are attracted to magnets? ;Sweet I have some small rare earth magnets that are super strong and would definitely grab anything that fell in there.
When you say that the crank will jam when turning it by hand - you are assuming that the tip has already fallen onto the piston?
Because the plug itself is still in the glowplug hole with the center rod sticking well out of the head. (the threaded part has been removed) I am assuming (wishfully thinking, really) that the rest of the glow plug is still attached to that centre rod.

I've got the crank marker turned to 8 o'clock (the offending glowplug is in cyl #3 which if I understand correctly is the 2nd from the front on the passenger side....right?)
How exactly close to 8 o'clock does it have to be in order to be sure it is at TDC? there must be a bit of wiggle factor there - say from 7:30 to 8:30ish?

I tugged and pushed on the broken GP and no movement yet. Have it soaking in PB blaster and will try over the next few days. Fortunately this is the summer toy hauler and not the daily driver.

Well....-cuss:mad:-cuss. While using my special tool from HapHazard Cutting & Welding Werks (looks suspiciously like needle nose vice grips welded onto a slide hammer :sly) the centre of the glow plug broke off and came out. I can no longer reach the tip from the outside.

I tried hammering a piece of 3/32 welding rod into the tip (read that somewhere) and it actually worked that it got stuck in there for a bit, but it just bent when I tried to hammer it down (same thing happened when I used the slide hammer downwards)

I removed the injector and started vacuuming out the oil/fuel that poured in the cyl but it got dark. I won't have time to get back to it til Sunday and will first of all try to hammer the tip in just a bit as it is not even broken loose yet. If I can get it moving but not dropped in, I`ll try to use a super long screw (welded onto a metal rod?) but if that doesn't work then I will hammer the tip into the head and use the air/vacuum to try to get it out the injector hole.
The cylinder is at TDC (as near as I can figure - it is cyl #3 and crank mark is at about 8:00) I'll confirm TDC with a helper and a coat hanger wire before knocking it in.

Its sad really, that if a parts guy ever tries to sell me an autolite glow plug I am going to end up in jail......;Really
