Here’s the video that I saw about Valvoline R&P. There are more out there, but this is the first one that I saw about it.

What about grabbing a uhaul flatbed, put your wife’s car on it. Give her a set of noise canceling headphones and take her for a night to some resort a tank of fuel away....

If the roads aren’t covered in salt, and the kids (if you have them) have a place to go.

Just a thought. But given your usage, a carb’d gas might be better. And maybe the engine had high idle time when you bought it. What about raising your idle, would that help?

@ROCK HARVEY i too have seen that oil and that video.

I used to run Valvoline European Formula in my TDI. (VW505.01)

Now they went to this restore formula. I didn’t think it would be formulated for diesels....

I've got some big hills here. I will hammer up those from now on and see if she comes around.
I just don't understand how I lost 3-4 quarts of oil "out of the blue" with no warning. Maybe the long warmup from single-digit temperatures?

My work started supplying that fancy valvoline stuff, there's even a tsb out for it.
Its spendy, havent used it myself yet, but have a friend who swears by it for older engines.

I personally run valvoline one 15w40 in my truck, but its also cause I get it cheap through work. I have no opinion on delo or delvac, never used it myself. Before using valvoline I used napa brand diesel oil, because its just rebranded valvoline.

Here's the tsb for your viewing pleasure.

At this point, I recommend staying with your IDI. You've put a lot of time and money into it. It would be a shame to throw it all away now. Especially if you can bring it back to using less oil. You can also try adding a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil or something similar at each oil change. By the way, adding to add a quart of oil with each tank of fuel isn't exactly low oil usage in the first place. It was already well on it's way here when you bought it.

Yeah. I was ok with adding a quart per tank. I'm just flustered with the sudden change to needing a LOT more oil.
I guess I'll start throwing snake oils in there while trying to work her harder and hope for the best.

I almost spit out my whiskey reading this. Cracked me the eff up haha
Now that I read what I wrote, prolly should have proofread that thing!! :dunno

But I did mean it sincerely, as in take the wife someplace for a weekend getaway. Her car is a backup and it’s been mentioned before that she doesn’t like how noisy the IDI is....

But I had to laugh at how it came out!! Haha, basically sounds like a trip to take the wife out....dirt nap style cookoo:rotflmao

Yup. Me too.
Right after we got married (1990) I bought a 1978 F-100 (351 Windsor, 2 barrel) and we loaded it with everything we owned plus towed her Toyota Supra on a dolly behind it from MA to OR.
We made it fine (with a few hiccups) but I don't think she'd be into playing that game again. lol
I do miss that bench seat with her sitting in the middle next to me. ;-)

I don't know about you, but I can always use more cinder blocks. I don't recall ever weighing one, but a few sources online say the standard 8x8x16 cinder block weighs 28 lbs. 50 of them would weigh 1400 lbs, and will just about cover the bed floor in a single layer. So, what I might would consider doing is buying 50 or however many will fit in a single layer and keep them in the truck for awhile. And floor it every time you take off. You don't have to drive fast; just accelerate as hard as possible. You can still pile whatever you need to haul on top of the blocks. Do that until the problem goes away, then stack the blocks somewhere out of the way until the next time you need to decoke.

I'll chime in here and relate what I experienced. I was using a lot of oil, blow by etc. I agree with the push it hard recommendation. Give Marvel a try. My blow by is much less and oil consumption is down considerably. My compression now is roughly 5-10 psi higher across all cylinders now. I copied and pasted below my response to member Camp back on Sept 5th 2024. Marvel is around here at Walmart, about $7-8.00 a quart. I did the full 20% as listed on the bottle for each oil change. I now routinely add 1 quart of Marvel Oil at regular oil changes, and put a half bottle in the fuel tank at fill ups every second or third fill up.

Not saying it's a cure all, but do give the mystery oil a try. When I bought my truck a NA 7.3, it had sat a while. Compression averaged out at 405 lbs, 375 low 440 high. But there was considerable blow by. I noticed it would actually push my dipstick up out of the tube, a weeping rear main seal, and this was after I had already changed out the CDR. Engine ran just fine otherwise, couple, three quarts of oil every 300-500 miles. Now, using Chevron Delo 15W-40 plus quart of Marvel, with a new filter each time, I changed oil, filter, and Marvel at about 750-1000 mi interval three times to sort of flush the engine out, and now blow by is very minimal, weeping rear main nearly cleared up, dipstick stays put. If the rings were stuck before, they must have been freed up some now. Would be interesting to check the compression now to see where each cylinder stands.
I'd have to give Marvel Mystery Oil a thumbs up. I also favor Chevron Delo syn blend now. around here in Florida, at Walmart, it's cheaper than the other diesel oils.
