Still having issues...

So i got my tach sensor in from ford today, didn't take five minutes to put in. Got in the truck and took it down the road and nothing seemed to be different. Now where is the TPS located? What I believe to be it is a little gold colored plunger on one end and round black plastic with a small plug on the other, this little gold colored plunger is collapsed into the metal part and moves freely and the black plastic is almost broken off. In my previous thread someone mentioned to check it next so thats what im goin on. My next question, I know theres a shift solenoid on a E4OD PSD? Is there one on mine? Any help is appreciated guys

I was just on the net lookin around and found something! An ASE Ford mechanic states that the manual lever position switch aka the neutral position switch (I have a brand new one on my truck) tells the starter and the POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODUAL (pcm) what gear you have selected. So if the pcm governs that then couldnt that be a possibility? Maybe the corresponding prongs are corroded or dirty?

Without a picture of the broken item your refering to I can't tel you what it is but... The tps switch is located on the drivers side of the injection pump. It has three wires feeding it. the center wire is where you take the voltage readings. Warm up the engine. Shut it down. Then its key on engine off. Use a digital voltmeter to see what the voltage is at the idle setting. It must be between .96 and 1.2 volts. The lower the setting the softer the shifts and the higher setting give a firmer shift. They do wear out around 50,000 miles too.

I don't think we have a PCM due to the fact that we are mechanically injected. we don't need a computer telling out injectors when to fire and other things.

as far as i know the only computers that we have would be the transmission control computer and the abs computer.

that is why when you try to scan these trucks for codes you only get tranny codes.

My truck has 289k on the body so maybe it is time to check that I just looked at it and its a little dirty lookin in there. And the computer for the trans is where the pcm on PSD's right?

The TPS (FIPL) is on the drivers side of the IP. What you're describing sounds like the cold idle advance solenoid plunger.

Those do have a life expectancy and should be tested for voltage as well.

Test

The neutral saftey switch aka Range sensor is on the drivers side of the pan where the selector cable connectos to.
I don't have the specs in front of me as to what pins should be reading for testing purposes.

The TCM is in the drivers side kick panel behind the E-Brake. There is a couple connector for it through the firewall below the brake booster.....

Pictures help. I've always claimed that. Here is a picture of the IP on my truck. I have a '92 with an E4OD.

In the picture you can see the TPS from a top view. In the lower right corner you can see a number "2", and just above it are three wires. Follow them left to the TPS connector. The connector is black, with a broken snap clip. It plugs onto the TPS, the gray thing mounted on the IP. The TPS is adjusted by rotating the TPS on the shaft coming out of the IP. You can see the attachment in the shadows, with a set screw in it. Don't loosen the set screw unless you are actually replacing the TPS.

I'll let somebody else tell you how to adjust the TPS.

I pulled the bolt and plug out of the computer that i think controls the trans. I turned the key and everything else worked so i'm pretty sure its the trans computer. its plug with a bolt to remove it on the drivers side of the firewall near the bottom. It is very dirty and theres trash in some of the connections. Will brake cleaner harm this? or should i go get some air duster? If i had any way to get big enough pics I would but i do not

use only a contact cleaner thats harmless to plastic in the spray cans on the plastic electrical connecters.

Rectangular connector? If so then yes.
