Starting issue 7.3 IDI

I have a 1990 F250 with a 7.3 IDI

the problem i have is when i start it, it runs for 30 sec and then dies. When i try to start it back up i have to let it sit their and crank for about a min or 2 before it starts back up.

It only does it when its could, after i drive it and let it sit for 20min or so i can start it right back up with no problems.

anyone know whats going on?

Do a search for "air intrusion", "o-rings" and "o-ring kit", "o-ring #111, "air fuel lines".

You have air getting into you fuel system. Typically this is caused by an o-ring failure on the return line cap system on the injectors. Which means it's time to replace. You can approach this at a couple of different ways. You can replace only the o-rings and caps that are giving you problems or you can replace the entire return line system. I have been doing just replace the cap and o-rings that are giving me problems for the last few years. Now I do this by going down to ford and picking up just the cap that is needed and a couple of o-rings. Or you can purchase an entire return line kit from a local diesel shop for around 40-50 bucks. I used to do just that but years ago I started just replacing what was bad - is it wrong to do that - can you end up chasing your tail that way - yes... but typically I don't end up chasing my tail only in a few cases.

The choice is yours.

How to tell which one is bad - look for the wet injector.

Yup, a classic example of air/fuel leak. The truck will start and run for a few seconds untill the air gets to the IP and it dies. Then you have to crank and crank to bleed the air out and it runs fine. Let is sit for a while and air leaks back into the system and you have to repeat the process.

And once you replace the return lines you may be looking at a new starter too. Only crank it over for 10-15 seconds then let it rest for 2min. These starters take a lot of voltage to do a lot of work. You can easily burn it out by doing the above.

Well thanks for all the answers, but none of my injectors look wet. I think the problem is coming from the air/fuel separator. their is a small drip of fuel only when its running, the top is wet but cant find where its coming from

racor makes a nice unit that almost bolts in place of the factory unit. i love the one on mine. it is a filter/water sep setup. i am running the 660 i belive...

If it's wet, it's leaking fuel out and air is going in...losing prime of the fuel system.

Look under the black cap for the fuel heater (rectangular) and if it's wet under that then you have a couple o-rings to replace.
