Calvin that H1C you have has either a 18.5 or 21cm^2 housing. If I remember correctly the A/R ratio for those (considering they have T3 mounts) is like 1.50 A/R for the 21cm housing. Talk about a slow spool LOL

sorry, i cant help it..... this thread reminds me why i went back to a super duty. dont have to worry about coolant temps, egts, having enough power, and if i am going to be able to get it slowed down coming back down.... :D

believe me when I tell you I am tempted to bolt that H1C where a ATS 093 was at and see how quickly I can get a pair of heads to lift off.:eek:cookoo:D
I do have a 7.3 that's near death that I just might try that on:D
I do want to get it done before it rains again so I can go find a mudhole and play in it with the truck....;p
(old enough to know better but not dead yet:D)

if you ever given your IDI the same chance you give the SD, you wouldn't be saying that. In 2005 I did a major overhaul on my F350, threw a whole bunch of $$$ at it and got a kick-ass tow rig in the end. Oh yea, the $$$ spent was still under $10k(including purchase)....stupid money for an IDI, but peanuts for a SD. I have yet to regret doing so. The truck has ample ballz and yet tame enough to get loaned out without worrying about it getting hurt. Other than a sniff of ether on a really cold morning, the rest of the day can be a no-brainer. There's a few on this board who's taken it on a long run and have commented on the power and the comfort. It truly is a Caddy with ballz:D

mt two cents too much reading
but i used to tow 4k in my 1200lb trailer and another 4k in bed all hills were a bit steeper but shorter and the stroker crank motor i have did well keeping a steady pace if i had a rolling start
for some reason if starting on a hill i bogg down quick problly the auto trans
just get the cummins you can tow down hill at terminal velocity when the brakes go out

calvin, how did i not give it a chance? i stuck a bunch of money on my 90 while i had it, even turbo'd it and add the tranny swap. it was still nothing to what my 99 is now and my 99 isnt really anything anyways. i really did enjoy the simplicity of the idi, but with its short comings, it just made sense, to me anyways, to start with a better platform. it isnt much different with others saying that a cummins is a better motor for towing. i hope i am not being taken as trying to start anything.

My stock 93 F350 CC DW 4.10, E40D, and 222K will pull 40 - 45 with 5-7K like Greenie listed above in a 5-6% grade, however on flat highway I'll stay at 62-65 (2100-2300rpm) since these trucks were built and geared when the national hwy speed was 55. I do have a question for Greenie, at 80mph does your cooling fan clutch come on and off frequently? I ask because I notice mine roaring up from time to time as the temp goes up maybe more often than I think? My thought is that since it's designed to tow up to 12,5K why would it be going up and down so often (temperature wise) with only half a load at 65mph?

No, the fan rarely engages. I replaced the first fan clutch thinking it was worn out, the replacement is the same. If I ever replace the fan again it'll be with a clutch that engages at a lower temperature.

Try boiling your radiator, or putting a lower temp thermostat in. I have had that same fan clutch issue with both IDI and powerstroke and it was just that the cooling system was not in top shape any more.
You might be able to fix it with just a flush and new antifreeze. The lower temp thermostat is an easy fix, but might not work if your radiator is too clogged.

My local grade is 7% and two miles long. My 5'r is a little over 10k loaded and the truck is 6700, so I'm like 17k total. Hitting the grade at 65, I'm doing like 35 by the time I reach the top. If I remember correctly, I had about 9lbs boost and 900 degrees egt. I could turn up the fuel more, but don't want a lot of black smoke.

Looking forward to what Gary posts.....

I just moved all my stuff up to Grass Valley from Auburn, theres a couple places on 49 that get nice and steep.

With a fully loaded 6x12 uhaul trailer, and a bed load of misc. stuff, the wife, the kid and I pulled a steady 65, and only got down to 55 on the steepest part.

Coolant temp stayed way down (thermostat was stuck open) EGT's kept below 1100 and I hit 10 psi easy on the boost...

This is my first turbo IDI (the third IDI for me) and WOW what a difference! The ZF is nice too, keeps my RPMs where they need to be.

Stopped at a gas station along the way for snacks and had a guy tell me "Nice powerstroke" I need a sticker for the back window that says "Don't call it a powerstroke" :D

I don't really care if I get passed by thirty dodgecummins along the way, my IDI trucks have never let me down, and I don't care who you are they look better doing it... ;Really

Sorry I missed this earlier. I don't pull big stuff, and there aren't many 8% grades around here. But, I've pulled 4 to 5 tons on a trailer in very hilly terrain without noticing any real change in the truck's behavior. Boost was up a bit in the 5-8psi range on hills that normally only produce 1-2 psi. EGT's never even an issue..... 750 at a max. Coolant temp was unchanged. Speed was whatever I wanted it to be. The brakes were another story. Gotta start slowing much sooner and you gotta watch out for clowns pulling out in front of you. Hydroboost would be a nice help with the braking performance.

Loaded at 32,000 pounds pulling Pacheco Pass at 9lbs of boost I am in first gear doing 19mph. Nope, no speeding there. I have since then changted pumps, advanced the timing and turned it up a bunch. Curios to see now, but i think the egt's are going to climb way to fast. I feel a cam changed coming along with an intercooler.

you should also state if you have 3.55 or 4.10 gears........big difference.

There is a 1.5 mile grade from my house that is 8 to 10% grade that I have to start from a dead stop at the bottom. Pulling a 16 ft. gooseneck lowboy with a Ford 3610 tractor and bush-hog, I can reach and maintain 30 mph all the way to the top. The grade has two steep curves in it though and I can only go about 40 mph empty because of the curves. My truck can pull nowhere near as fast as my buddy's Cummins but we both get there only he gets there a litttle sooner.
