What's the heavier gauge wire running to the front of your pump?

Does the limiter require power? Or is that for a high idle switch?

2 mgg increase , excellent!. Its amazing what happens when you arent just blowing unburnt fuel out the exhaust pipe ( and that's all that black smoke is)

One little interesting factoid, VW made one *fuel saver* model that did NOT come with an aneroid on the pump... but what they did was calibrate it so gutless as to where it was fueled down to where it wouldnt smoke when you tromped on it, so basically max fuel was fairly off idle and you had to wait on the thing. VERY good mileage, but you had better be commuting on flat ground and be real good at shifting.

Heavier gauge wire... Not related. Goes to my electric fuel pump, pulls power from the FSS, so key-on=pump on.

It is that time again for emission testing. The limit is 20% and my Truck blew a 64%. That is a new record for me especially since last year was a 13%.

I am tired of messing around with timing and other tricks to make my truck pass. Will the Smoke Puff Limiter allow me to severely limit fuel, like absolutely smokeless regardless of throttle input?

Also, is there anything detrimental to say, pinching the fuel line before the lift pump with a clamp or vise grips to limit fuel?

Thanks!

Umm first question is why is it so high? Dont know about in Utah but over here the main thing they care about is smoke on decel/coasting you can get away with a LOT on snap throttle. Frankly if the main thing your worried about is emissions Id just turn the fuel down significantly for the tests then turn it back up afterwards (if youve got the tools you can even do it in the parking lot right before/after)

If that moose pump was put on since the last test , then that might have an effect on the smoke output if they floored it, otherwise, you may have issues with stuck rings or a guide wearing for it to go up that much if nothing was changed. We need to know that first. Was the big pump put on since the last test, or has nothing changed? if nothing changed, then you may have an internal issue and in that case a smoke puff limiter wouldnt do a thing . If its just the new pump, then yes, it would do wonders You would have all of teh moose on the top where you need it when you have teh boost there to burn it, but no extra fuel being stuffed in when you dont have teh air to burn it

i agree, sounds like you have something wrong.....anyways, based on the way i understand the smoke limiter is it gets a boost reference and limits total fuel out put until sufficient boost is available, so yes the smoke limiter would work for your needs.

-- I apologize for the cross-post, just hoping this is seen without creating a new thread --

I just received my Smoke Puff Limiter, but I did not recieve instructions in the box. There is only the limiter and a sales receipt. I contacted Hypermax and they said they would try to email me a copy...

Does anyone have a set of instructions to post up or a step by step, how-to?Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it is swapping one IP cover for the other but I haven't found detailed installs online, any help is much appreciated.

Hm, wonder if Mel would install one of these if asked when doing a moose or baby moose build for someone? Just a thought.

We do, and we have, and it is an option I sell. If Hypermax fails you, I can provide the instructions.

Now that you have had the puff limiter for a while do you have any updates on overall impressions? Are you still thinking you get 2 mpg more? What about power, same, better or worse than without? I know its kind of an old thread but I only saw you report on one fuel calculation. Also, does it puff less on start up or only after its running? Thanks for reporting

Ok, for a short update, I still believe the ~2mpg is correct, but my driving has changed too, I'm only using the truck for pulling/hunting, and see about 19-20 mpg's average, ad for power its still snappier at take off, but has near no difference past acceleration snap. It will let out a big puff if the trans downshifts, but not near as much as without, and doesn't have any effect on startup, although my truck doesn't generally smoke on startup anyways.
