seal questions

hey i need to replace my rear pinion seal and was wondering if there is anything i should do while im there? Words of caution?

Also i cant find the name of this seal but i can describe it. It is a little rubber thingy that sits on the splines of the pinion almost like a rubber hair scrunchie and it fills the spaces between the spline mating surface to keep oil from leaking. Know what im talking about? Where can it get this and whats the name for it?

I'll offer up this: Buy a new flange nut. And, have the means to torque it properly. Huge torque required.

When you took the nut off is that what you are talking about? If so it's just silicone RTV. To torque it I have a 48" pipe wrench that I use to hold the yoke from turning while I torque it. Ford says min. 254 ft lbs.

RTV is what I was thinking also. There is a crush washer in there that will need to be replaced because once its crushed and you have the proper torque on everything it can't come back to that same torque and crush without being overtorqued and crushed. So I have been told about this. The nut usually is a one time use because it has been known to loosen up on a few mwmbers trucks when they tried to reuse it. Thats a leak you don't want and that nut loosening up causes all kinds of problems in the pinnion bearings and seal.

i dont think its rtv> It is the same type of material but is a formed gasket thingy. Ford dont know what im talking about, so i ll just have to pull it apart i guess

so i should buy some new crush washers the pinion nut and seal, and figure out what the heck that thingy is.
