I went a little bonzo and started calculating gear ratios and , providing my math isn't total garbage, here's what I came up with for a couple of the units using 4.10 and 3.55 rear ends. The three sped unit gives a nice OD, but not any real useful gears in between on the top end, the 4 speed unit lends itself to quite a few useful combinations. This was obviously only 2 boxes i figured up, there's a lot of other possibilities, but I'm leaning heavily toward the 8341 in that configuration .if I can find one. The 3 speed with a '85 od might give a better split than the .73, but it's 3am and I'm pooped :D

5831 &3.55
OD .73 Direct Under 2.0
5th 1.74 2.7 9.8
4th 2.59 3.55 10.65
3rd 4.08 5.04 12.14
2nd 7.46 8.41 15.51
1st 13.74 14.7 21.8

5831 & 4.1
OD .73 Direct Under 2.0
5th 2.01 3.12 11.32
4th 2.99 4.1 12.3
3rd 4.72 5.82 14.02
2nd 8.61 9.72 17.92

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
And we do know we'll lose hp to wheels everytime we add gears/transmissions, don't we?
I'm always finding really good info somewhere on the Net, save/file/bookmark it, then can't find it...can't remember what I filed it under....can't remember if I did save it,....or even suddenly run up on it saved under some stupid heading & wonder "what's this, where it come from, I never saw this....,or did I...?"

But anyway, I saw somewhere other day that they calculated about 20-30 horses for one of these man. aux. 3-4 speed units.

Little bit here, little bit there....Horses lost from fan, AC, alternator, low tires, heavy gearbox fluids,......
On semis we used to figure about 25% lost from flywheel to ground 1st axle, then another 10-15% to 2nd axle.

:rotflmao But I don't care, I want one. Way I figure it, I can still go fast enough to be first one there, fast enough to get tickets, fast enough to pass ****** POWERED HAIRY GOATS!!! :rotflmao :rotflmao :rotflmao

my next project is invent a goat hair wiper to wipe goat hair from my radiator!!!;Really :rotflmao

Well you guys may already runned up on this site, Cohen & Sons but it kinda shows some of prices they want for some of these units in today's market.
Another interesting tid-bit I ran up on at the TTC site under Gen Lit. Model & Part Numbering System, # T240-2 under "Old Numbering System" the Transmissions are rated in Ft# torque....ie; #6052B is rated 600FT#, # 1420-3B is 1400ft#.
However, the Aux. tran. are rated for the transmission they're compatible with...ie: a 8341 aux would be compatible with an 830ft# torque transmission, 7041=....700ft# tran., 5831=580ft#, etc, etc.
At least that's way I interperate this literature.

Are there any Driveline/Ujoint Gru-rues here on OB?
I not so smart when it comes to angles & dangles etc....I do know if they ain't right, they will spit out with a BIG BANG!

You guys figured out yet about what some of these units you looking at may weigh? I got feeling that they'll weigh 3-400# mounted, depending.
I don't remember what a ZF5 weighs????

I gust got a neat envelope in the mail today. I got a couple of old spicer brochures off ebay. some handy stuff in there
Where you have a tranny that ends in a 1 it is an iron case, and if it ends in a 5 it's an aluminum case. ( i.e. 8341= iron, 8345= Aluminum ) That explains why they have all those with the two number configurations

As far as size and weight, here's what I got on these things:

Auxiliary Transmission Model Length, flange to flange Approx weight
Iron Aluminum
5831 3 speed 18 13/32” 155
6041 4 speed 23” 250
7041 4 speed 25 3/16” 340
7231 3 speed 23” 230
8031 3 speed 27 1/16” 425 435
8341 4 speed 27 1/16” 460 380
P8341 4 speed air shift 27 1/16” 473 393
9441 4 speed 32 1/8” 690

Sorry, I can't get the format to line up on this chart, you'll have to use your imagination to get everything in the correct column .

I would like to have a short 4-speed like a NP435 to go behind my C-6, then the t-case bolted to the back of the 435. That would give me three gears of underdrive and 4th would be 1:1 just like final in my C-6. With my 35" tires, I don't need overdrive, I need underdrive.

Robert, those #s & wt correspond with the handwritten Scaned Spicer Aux Ratios we found on Web.

Jeremy, I've thought about pretty well same thing about a 4 speed. Not smart enough to figure out how to do input shaft etc though.
I came thru SaltLake once snooping round for an aux. Got phone # on some guys that supposedly taking 2 older iron cased Ford 4speeds, turn 1 around, do some machine work on 'em, mating them together into 1 unit.....

It was after hours so I was gonna call them day or so later from Or. I called, missed the main guy I needed to talk to, then got busy & lost phone #....

I delivered some stuff once to place in Oklahoma once....couple rich retired guys owning about gizillion acres & just playing in later years.
They had taken some kind of something....no doors, windows, top, just enough fenders to not sling mud.....added 3-4 transmissions, supped up the engine, out there running round ramping & trying to kill themselves. They said they needed it to feed the horses, cows, chickens, run to the store, cops were PO'ed cause they couldn't catch 'em.
I looked it over & at the time I understood how they hooked it all together......

It wouldn't entail too much crazy fab work, just making an input to spline the shaft. It would be done easiest with a 2wd C6 with a short u-joint shaft to the input shaft on the 4speed. And if the 4speed is a 4x4 trans, there would be a np205 already bolted to the rear.
My C6 is married to my 205, thats where I run into the first snag. I would have to either put a 2wd unit in place or make an adapter to mount in place of the existing t-case. Maybe one of these days when I have money and nothing better to do with my time, I'll build it.

Thought about it too - why not take an old clutch disc hub or two, weld them together, and weld them to the splined end of a yoke. Throw a U-joint into that, and then attach the U-joint to what you have coming out of the transmission.

Great idea, thats proly the cheapest route. If I ever get the opportunity to do it, I will.;Sweet
