I was just removing the starter and I went to remove one cable nut and the whole starter just fell out!!! The previous owner must have tried to start it after it through a rod. It broke the plate behind the engine that it bolts too.

Looks like a nice gear reduction starter... Look on the bright side.. Now its simple to reach all the bolts to the starter. Those adapter plates are founf all the time on Ebay. Every idi that fits the vans or pickup trucks will have one bolted to the back. they are all the same part.

I just found 2 of the plates on ebay under the 6.9 diesel parts forum. One was $100.00 and the other was $85.00. I have seen them for $50.00 too so if your needing one and have the time to shop thats the place if nobody on this form can help you out. It takes plenty to break these and when that happens id a rare thing but you sure need them right now. Too bad they are cast iron and not steel plate....

I belive this is the culprit. I think they got a hole in the pan and then just apoxyed it hoping for the best. Either they didnt put any oil back in or they ran it till it drained out of the pan. I pulled the pan and there was no oil at all. There was only oil in the oil filter.

Has anyone seen one of these left on the windshield?

Yup. My 1986 F250 had the plant sticker on the rear glass.

Man, that block is nothing more than an anchor now. Not sure the crank is salvagable. My bet is still the valves kissing pistons. The lack of oil killed the valves guides letting the valves get stuck on the seat. Once that happens, the piston hits the valve and death soon follows.
