Replacing VSS

Did a search and couldn't find any info on it.
My brothers truck has had issues with the speedometer flickering around and at the same time a clunking sound started coming from somewhere in the drivetrain. So we thought the axle was blown. My brother took some time to pull the cover and check out the internals of the axle. Everything checks out, no excessive slop and no loose bolts. In fact the gears and bearings look NEW. So I'm beginning to wonder if we actually have a genuine failure of the VSS? Where can we get one, how much does it cost, and how do you replace it?

Did you pull the VSS? If you do have something going on in the rearend, it will sometimes get metal filings on the sensor.

Haven't pulled the VSS yet, Not even sure how it comes out, does it just screw in? Nothing in the oil, no metal shavings or anything. I don't know what's going on.

There is a bolt 8mm bolt that hold it into the axle. Pull the bolt. Pull the VSS. replace VSS. put bolt back in. VERY SIMPLE. I would of done that before i opened the diff

Who knows when the oil was changed in it last anyway.

What year is your brothers truck? Is the clunking coming from the rear axle?

I just noticed your signature says its a 1994 my truck has the zf5 and I had asked on here awhile back about mine clunking and the conclusion was in the dual mass flywheel. I just haven't got around to replacing mine with a solid flywheel yet.

Thats the thing, we just replaced the flywheel and clutch with a brand new Valeo solid mass flywheel and clutch kit. We have both tried numerous ways of tracking down the clunk. It's not just a clunk its a clunk that you can actually FEEL in the truck and it only happens when you take off from a stop, and not every time. Hence why we thought it was a problem in the rear. When the VSS started acting up I thought for sure we'd found the problem. I have checked the motor mounts, all tranny mounts, spring mounts and shackles, nothing is loose.

If you were closer I have a spare vss that you could have to see if that would fix it but they probably don't cost much. It could maybe just need cleaned off. The clunk might be a seperate issue.

my 93 f350 is doin the same thing from a dead stop and only in first gear on a pull i have had the zf5 apart the rear end and the transfer case checked everything from rear up and still cant find it ,, so if yall find it let me know and i will see if thats my problem too

Just a thought, how do the U-Joints look? I would think they would do it all the time, but maybe something is happening at takeoff, with the extra load in the driveline.

I had a friend once that had a bricknose 4x4 and it had steering issues, at time is did not want to turn, or would not return to center after a turn. He eventually found out the U-Joints in the front knuckles were failing, and if they were in the right spot thry would "catch" and not move....

Just a thought, at least U-Joints aren't that difficult to replace if that is the problem.

Also, how about the yokes on the both ends, we have seen posted on here of more than one instance of the nut backing off and a yoke coming off, the last one that I can think of happened to Graham on the Nite Moose.....

x2 on the u-joints, along with anything in the rear suspension, the vss is like 20 or 30 at the most from a dealership, mine was broke.
