Took my diesel bath for no good reason really. Flipped to the rear tank, ran for about a minute, surged & died. Flip back to the front tank & it runs.

Is there a pump in the rear tank? My fuel gauge doesn't work on that tank but used to. Seems to me I started having this problem not long after the gauge went dead or at the same time. Could that tank unit be dead?

there is no pump in the tanks.do you have any idea how much fuel is in the tank?don't forget about that stupid rubber thingy that hangs off the sending unit that disintegrates and falls off causing the truck to run out of fuel at 1/4 of a tank.im having that issue with the front tank on my 94.

If it dies when You switch to the rear tank then it could be something bloking the fuel pickup, also You can get fuel sending units at any Jyard around here.

You may have to drop the tank, that one is easy.

if it dies right when you switch it is probably not an air leak.

I'd take the fuel line loose at the manual fuel pump and put some air to it.... try to see if a few psi could clear out the line. obviously be switched to the rear tank.

if your nervous about adding compressed air, take a handheld vacuum pump to the line near the fuel filter and try to get some fuel siphoned out. vinly tubing is good, you can see if there is any junk or air being pulled in.

That rear tank is full (figures, right?). It doesn't died as soon as I switch over but I don't think I'm getting anything from it. The truck runs long enough to use up what in the lines already then dies.

Where can I find a handheld vac pump? How much pressure would be too much to try to blow back from the manual fuel pump?

This help is greatly appreciated. I'm supposed to roll out around 4:00am tommorrow & would really like to have 2 tanks working. Is it worth going to Auto Zone & picking up a new units anyway? Are they open on Sunday?

On edit: Scrap AZ, they don't carry them. Boneyard or OEM -cuss

I should be in GA between 4-6:00pm if I can bet this damn tank working before I leave. Otherwise it's gonna be ALOT of fuel stops & later. Is there still a hotel right outside Valdosta? It was a dive but good enough. Unless of course, you want to help me pull the bed off the IDI & swap out the sending unit at your place? LOL I can sleep in the barn, really I don't mind!!

Pull the plug at the swithcing valve. Not really easy to get off but once off, you can short the approppriate wires together for your gauge. If the gauge for the rear tank comes to life when shorted and the switch is in the rear pos, valve is bad. Otherwise, you have a return or suction problem before the valve. Maybe some airpressure.

I take it you are on your trip already. If you haven't left yet, I will loan you a MityVac. I'm right in Bel Air, near John Caroll HS, so if you are still in the area, give me a call.

5-6pm I'll be at the farm in Willacoochee.

Hotels around here? yuck. You'd be better off staying at the Bed and Breakfast in Homerville.
It's only like $70 a night, fancy place, plus they feed you. Like I said, I'll be working there during the day most of this week.

I'd be happy to help pull the bed off/swap out sending unit

My barn is nice.... but trust me it isn't THAT nice.
