If your return doesn't allow oil to get out faster than it can get in then you are going to be pushing oil past your seals. The way I do it, is always have the return line a couple sizes bigger than the inlet. If it is a gravity return I won't run anything less than 5/8" hose, When I was running a turbo on my old gas motor it had a bend in the return to get around the belt because I was returning oil from the turbo to the front of the pan, I had to end up running 3/4" return line there, 5/8" wasn't big enough a bend it in (hard line for the bend).
In the case of a low mount turbo, It won't do you much good to have a bigger line than what your pump can move. On my remote mount I have 3/4" steel pipe 3 inches long on the return of the turbo straight down with a 90 elbow with a 3/4" check valve and after that it goes to 1/2" because that is as big as the inlet on the fuel pump, mine works fine with no oil past the seals in the turbo, the big pipe down off the return is a buffer area so between pulls of the pump (diaphram fuel pump) there is more room than the oil can easily fill and cause problems, I was probably being over cautious but it works good for me.
