Re assure me

Hey all,

I just got my "new" truck in the driveway. She's a '90 F-350 CC non turbo with a ZF5. It has been sitting a bit so it has the usual musty smell that cars have and it needs a bath. BUT I only spent $1,250 for it. I have an extended cab and I was just getting it for parts. Instead I think I'll get it running. My wife is about to have a litter of kittens because the thinks I spent too much on it. What do you think?

4x4? Miles? What doesn't work? (besides engine)? Batteries good? Starter? Leaks?

No 4x4, ~38,123 on the clicker. The previous owner said that he had a guy replace the GP's abd he boogered up the wiring on the timer. and on top of that he burnt the starter up trying to get it lit with no preheat. Motor has the typical leaks that a 19 yaer old would have.

I'm sure that I'll be asking you a few questions... Oh yeah!! Here's one for you. Which one if the wires going to the IP needs to be hot to get it to work? The ign. key got misplaced and I want to hear the motor run first. Also can you rebuild a gear reduction starter? This one seems to drag.

I have all my fab tools from when I had a biz. packed into a shed and cant even use them!

That's a good price. Anything under 2K for a running serviceable truck is a fair deal if you don't have to do any work to it.

The red wire with the green stripe that goes to the injection pump is the one that needs to be hot in order for it to run. It's the one that is sort of off to the side of the injection pump, not the one that it right on the very very top cover.

I though that the plug with two wires was the FSS? isn't the one with one wire on the IP the cold advance (not cold Idle advance, thats on the pass, side of IP.)?

I don't know your area, but 1250 for a non-running truck seems kinda steep. If the body is in great shape, it may be worth it.

At minimum, your gonna need a starter, a new solid state GP controller ( unless the old one tests ok), and probably batteries.

So you'l need to ask your litter-bearing wife for about $400 more.

Hmmm... sorry. I missed the part that it didn't run. That's near the upper reaches of a fair price, depending on what's wrong with it. I've sold running trucks for less than that.

I paid 750 for mine, but it started (hard though) and drove, and I had 1500 in reciepts for work done in the last 2 years.

yes, people *can* rebuild the starter. I prefered the Lifetime Autozone warrenty, $120.
I've replaced it twice in the last decade for free.
