Where is the best place to have the pyro located? Before or after the turbo? I was watching TV and the guy installed it in the exhaust manifold stating that it gets a more accurate reading there.

Correct, you want the pyrometer installed before the turbo, and as close to the engine as possible.

pistons are the first thing thats going to melt when your exhaust temps get too high. so you want the pyro as close to the pistons as possible.

some IDIs have a flat on the drivers side manifold. Just before it dumps down. Mine didnt. But still I just drilled and tapped the manifold. Post turbo is cooler than pre turbo. Hence the importance of running pre turbo. That being said. I have a turbo timmer that is mounted post turbo. This way the controller will monitor the turbos temp.

Before is best, but if the turbo is already installed and you don't want to have to take it off or risk getting shavins run through the thing , you can always get one of the pyros that have the face on the gauge printed for post turbo installation so the warning ranges ( yellow -red ) are about 300 deg f lower so you don'[t have to wear your brain out going down the road.

I was confused. I was thinking that the turbo set up I have had the pyro after the turbo. I will go look at it later today.

No it doesnt matter which side. When I do mine I just put them in the crossover pipe on the drivers side about 1.5" below the flange that mounts to the manifold. I figure atleast you can pull the crossover off and do the work outside of the truck. Makes it easier to clean the shavings out and weld the bung onto the pipe. The way I look at it thats as close to the head you can get without actually drilling out the manifold. There is very little to no temp drop when you mount it that close.

i drilled and tapped the manifold right at the third cylinder back on the drivers side. it was the most convieniant place for me and a short wire run. that was before the turbo though so i didnt have to worry about shavings.

Jred... Yea me too... installed the pillar gauges 2 weeks ago... wont install the turbo until next week... so shavings should be blown thru by then...

All right I found mine. It's right next to the exhaust flange were the turbo bolts up to the exhaust. Should I leave it there or move it closer?

I dont think 3 inches will matter, but you sound like its right next to the turbo, and hence has the whole crossover pipe to cool down the Exhuast. I would move it to the manifold.

I don;t want to go poking random holes in my manifold
