I got an email from someone wanting to trade my E4od for a zf5, but the truck they have is a 97 which means its a psd. Is there anyway for the sucker to work in my truck, and vice versa for them?

Some of the electronics are different. And he will need aPCM form an auto truck to run it. But all the hard parts are the same and it will bolt in

HOpefully I get mine fixed and if this guy wants to. Ill see what he thinks once he knows mine is an idi. Ill let him know its 100% doable but with a little bit of work for him locating a few odds and ends parts.

Is the psd flywheel and clutch the same?

This is whats not the same between the idi and psd engines and trans. The flexplates and flywheels are drilled differantly for the psd and idi cranks. They will not swap. The torque converters will not swap either. The idi is a 4 bolt pattern and the psd is a 6 bolt pattern. I was told once that we could have a special converter made so we could use a psd on a idi but I have never gone into proving this.

The easy way to put an E4OD into a manual truck Use an aftermarket controller. Keep the manual PCM so it will play nice.

The flexplate can be had from Ford or a junkyard. Unlike IDI stuff the parts are available.

The converter neded will be a six stud unit. Putting the converter behind a PSD use a quality unit. Stock rebuilds suck. :puke:

Now for the trans. Persoanally I wouldn't use it without rebuilding it. There are many upgrades that need to be addressed. So use it as a core or rebuild it with some good stuff so it will live behind the PSD.;Sweet

You really don't need a six stud converter for an IDI. There are four stud converter with the same specs for the PSD six stud. This is what I use in my 90. Note this is an aftermarket unit.

If you wanted to change the tranny to a 4R100 use a four stud IDI converter. If you want to use an early E4OD on a PSD. Use a six stud converter.

Bottom line is this Ryan, you will need that trans from the 5 speed truck along with the pedals, shifter, steering columns will need to be traded, and if you REALLY wanna get into it, the floor pan that unscrews from the cab floor...you will be into it that far, what's another 15 or so screws? Get BOTH driveshafts and give him BOTH of yours, as well, trade the transmission crossmembers. If you are keeping your own transfer cases...trade connecting linkages that run from the handle to the actuaer on the case itself.

ALSO, make sure his truck is an F350 as well....if not you will need to trade transfer sace yokes and both of you guys will need to have front driveshafts modified....yours can be shortened to match the shorter ZF, but he will need a new one made....as it will be 5" or so too short.

Then you will need to buy a new clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate and flywheel to make things work on your truck.

I did that swap a year ago. WELL worth it!!! The truck REALLY comes to life once that damned TC is gone!!!

Well Rich... Your psd e4od has a 6 stud converter where an id has a 4 stud converter. I think calling Brian at BTS will help in finding out whats available out there. I have his triple disc converter in my BTS e4od trans. Stock converters have 25 square inches of friction material and they work fairly well. The triple disc has 150 square inches of friction material. No idi will ever ruin one of those thats for sure....:sly
