Positive Battery Cable

I'm a big fan of 3/0 for any diesel starter. it may not be needed, but you can sure hear your starter spin faster with the larger cable. It's just easier on the starter to not have to fight for juice. I'd use 4/0 if it wasnt so hard to make the curves with, but between that and the extra load it puts on your batt terminals in such close quarters, 3/0 is a happy medium.

You can save a bundle making your own cables. Pick up a crimper like this one amazon has for about 50 bucks then go to a heavy truck supply and buy cables and ends ( do not be tempted to use welding cable, it will not hold up against oil and fuel ) Get a bottle of conductive grease like No Al-ox ( find it at Lowes etc near the service entrance boxes) saturate the cable ends with the conductive grease before inserting into the cable end to crimp, to prevent oxidation, then seal joint with heat shrink tubing to make air tight. Your new cables will out last a set of factory made cables for a fraction of the cost

Many years back I bought both the positive and negative cables from Wrangler Electronics in Portland Oregon. I also bought their military style clamps for the positive cable ennds. I got a few of their lugs too. Then I soldiered them on the positive cables at the batterys and the cable going to the starter. Simple and ifficient and the starter spins like a mad man Some day I will change the batterys to the group 31 lug tops and be done with the post top batterys forever...
