pinion seal leak question.

ok i relised yesterday when i started cleaning the rear up that it is leaking at the pinion seal... i wanted to get it back on wheels so i stuffed the rear back in anyway, but now i'm wondering if i can replace the seal from the outside or do i need to pull the whole rear apart. i'm hoping i can replace it the easy way from the outside, but i know its never that easy..

from the outside.. remove nut with impact,remove yoke,remove seal,[oil will come out,unless your real low],put vaseline on the "garter" spring on backside of seal[so it wont pop off!!!]drive in,,STRAIGHT!!!, put yoke back on,,and with NEW nut,,tighten according to the correct specs..and yes,,there is a torque...loose or too tight, are both bad..

sweeeet, thanks a bunch. i'll do that a chrome cover at the same time, after i get the clutch and everything else done..

that chrome cover will leak more than the bad seal, unles you sand the mating surface rough.

If the yoke is scored then make sure you get a speedy sleeve for it or the new seal is a waste of money.

Pinion nut torque setting is 160 ftlbs.
Locktite the snot out of it as well.

I could be wrong; I'm not all that knowledgeable about differentials, but I thought that, if you removed that nut, you had to reset the bearing preload?

I have a pinion seal leak on my rear axle, but I may end up swapping to a dualie axle...

You should reset or at least check bearing preload. A crush sleeve is technically a one use only item and should be replaced each time.

Not saying this is the best idea, but i had to replace my seal and gunned it off changed the seal gunned it on, never had any problems with it. Was in a bit of time crunch.

On another note, check your axle tube vent that it is not plugged. 90% of the time it is a plugged vent that kills the seal in the first place. Pressure builds in the axle and puts excessive pressure on the seal increasing wear and pushing oil out past it.
