My good fellows some of you know about my tick noise on the engine. With Mel we have searched the origin of this thingy. Well today I replaced all 8 injectors with brand new stanadyne, I only run it for 1/2 hour so far and it is hard to say but I still think the tick noise is still there but not on one spot but all around. I will keep runing it and see if anything changes.

Just wanted all you guys to know.

His engine has a definite miss, which is where the tick sound is coming from. It's not a full miss though. Might be a late valve or something. At this rate EZ, it may just have to be something we live with.

It only bothers me when I hear another IDI and it has that smooth diesel sound (like on the IDI rallys). If I could think it will not afect the life of the engine I'll leave it alone but not knowing what is it exactly kills me. I'm sure I will some time so if the truck runs as it should I think you are right Mel it provably is something to live with.

Thank you, Exekiel.

I had a "tick" for about 5000 miles. After doing a compression check we isolated it down to a bad valve. I pulled the heads and took them to a machine shop where I found out that the exhaust valve had a bad guide and it screwed up the valve. The machinist said we caught it in time before the valve dropped and took out a piston.. The point? Try to isolate the problem and get it fixed. Hate to see you destroy your motor. Just my 02 cents.. Good luck with it...
P.S. Now it runs real sweet. Worth the work...

Hey,Zeek,Mel,Ya'll done a compression test yet?If I can find my kit you wanna borrow it(like Mel wouldn't have this already!?!).I think it is laying in the White Lightning but not real sure....Going on 2 years since I played with it.You don't think it could have a problem like this engine I got from Tanya do ya?The Rebuilder used cheap POS lifters and the springs were broken inside.Allowing the little cup thingy to go down when they were not pumped up by the oil pressure.

I did a compression test already (had to buy the gauge and all to do it) and the results where

#1 cyl
at the 1st stroke 290 pressure
from the 2nd to the 5th stroke it build up to 480 pressure

#3 cyl
1st stroke 250
2nd to 5th stroke 460

#5
1st stroke 280
2nd to 5th stroke 470

#7
1st stroke 260
2nd to 5th stroke 460

#2
1st stroke 270
2nd to 5th stroke 460

#4
1st stroke 245
2nd to 5th stroke 440

#6
1st stroke 270
2nd to 5th stroke 450

#8
1st stroke 280
2nd to 5th stroke 460

I do not know wath it is, now I have the sfw done and when I get under the truck I feel like if it where coming from there but I dont know if that is possible.

Well by now EZ, has thousands of miles on this tick. His Jasper warranty is probably worth the paper it was printed on. I'm not one to give up, but in all honesty, I just won't have time for a while to pull the heads if he wants to go that route. It will be all I can do to get the Bronco back together, the boat winterized, and all the other stuff I need to get done. A valve is the only thing left to blame.

If you are a real glutton for punishment, pull the valve covers, intake and turkey pan off. there you may find your answer. In my "Factory Ford Rebuild" that scattered, I found two lifters...one had completely puked its guts out and the other was getting ready to **** its pushrod cup. Provided for quite a few amazed looks last Friday nite. Especially of the fact that I went from TX to Ca on 7holes, 6gal of water on every fillup(400mi), and 3 gal of oil. why did I bring this up? If all you got is a tick, leave it alone. Its prolly in your valvetrain. With the cost of pulling things apart and fixing it, there is little justification. The shop next door had a service truck with a loose wristpin that ran for ten years with every mech trying to scatter the motor and she still ran until the frame broke.

Well I wont let it alone forever just watch it's progress on this tick if it gets louder. Mel some time if possible I'd like to pop test the injectors for the heck of it. On time i'll pull the vc and see wath's there too but as you guys are saying now it might be better leave it alone.

EZ, I am pretty convinced it is not the injectors anymore. The tick and miss are only noticeable at idle, and your truck runs like a top, with no unusual noises under power. Calvin's suggestion is probably best, but you'll be into it for a couple of hundred in gaskets to do that job.

Calvin - next time you need an IDI killed just bring it to me :smash: I have faith that I can kill one... and the track record to prove it

Your track record is legendary  :hail  :hail
the beutiful thing about these motors, and for the life of me I don't know why these trucks in private owners have so much trouble, is the thrashability of them. Mind you, I don't run a fleet motor to its ragged performance limits, I do quite the opposite. Yes, I have a turbo, an IC and a slightly turned up pump.....but I don't have all the goodies maxed out. heck, I don't even have gauges in the truck(outside of factory idiot gauges). The secrect? Everything is at the low-end of the performance settings. I could be running 12 lbs of boost, but I have it set to 6lbs. I could be blowing coal but the pump is dialed in to put out a marginal amount at best, and yet I can still put the look of shear terror in the eyes of my riders :D Power is one thing, hustling a tank around in urban traffic is another. We purposely don't run anything out to the max on fleet apps so when the SHTF there is plenty of margin to bring her home. Plenty of PM love doesn't hurt either ;Sweet
