Not Start after running question

Hello Friends,

I have a questions about my IDI ('91 F250 7.3 NA) that's been bugging me. It started happening about 2 months ago.

It will start okay, runs smooth as a baby's bottom, but after I shut it off, i'll run into a store for 15 mins or so, then get back in and start it. It starts fine, but after about 5 seconds of running it runs rough and shuts off. After that, I can't restart it for about 20-30 minutes. It's obviously not the fuel pump or anything like that. I even tried to start it with ether once (just checking) and that didn't work either. My Beast has left me stranded more than once and it's really starting to get to me. Any help would be wonderful !!!

pour a bottle of cool water over the IP when this happens and see if it will restart.

Does this issue go away after 2 or 3 hours? Your injection pump may be worn out and being subject to heat soak. Basically the internals wear causing a wider gap between them and the rate of expansion changes and won't allow them to pump fuel properly. A couple cups of cool water poured over your pump may temporarily cure this issue to get you out of a jam. Good luck and keep us posted

Injection pump....hadn't thought of that. Im gonna run outside and let her idle and duplicate the conditions and see if the water over the IP works. i'll let ya know how it works...Thanks!

Man, there's alot of bad IP's out there this month. Seems like everyone is having a heat-soak issue now

Yeah i think mines going out too. Been hard to start, especally when engine is warm. It doesn't help that its been close to 100 degrees all month here so far. I did let my truck sit in the driveway all day yesterday and today in the shade (we also had a long cooling rain shower last night) and when I went out to start it this afternoon it practically bump started...........
I was trying to rule out air in the system and I think I did it..........

So what is the concencus? Are u-haul IP's good? I know a bunch have installed them. I know its the cheapest thing going right now and for me thats a good thing, i'd like to spend more but its just not in my budget right now. I also need a steering box and u=haul has em for $72 which is awesome with no core so I may buy a pump from them too.......

i still have the oringanl pump on my 91 and it starts with the flick of the key and thats with no glowplugs

Not to go off topic, but what kind of fuel conditioner do you use IDIdriver?

That's the way it seems to go. In the winter, there are a ton of glow plug threads. In the summer, heat soak.

Yup. Always starts to happen when the warm weather hits. This is due to the radiant heat from the radiator and engine during shut down. A couple of warnings, since no one mentioned it. The water you need is 12 to 16 ounces of ROOM TEMPERATURE water. Don't use cold water! What you are going to do is pour it over the hydraulic head, which is the round part that has the lines attached to it. You understand that what you are going to do is shrink this part by forcing it to contract. It's very important to understand that you are shrinking a stationary part around a rotating part. If you shrink it TOO MUCH... well... let's just say that an input shaft is about $300 from Stanadyne, and a core with a broken one is of little value to a rebuilder. This trick works 99% of the time, but do understand the liability you take on when you try it. You should already have it in your mind that you are going to buy a new IP, and your doing this "just for the hell of it".

Try opening the hood right after shut down to let that heat out. Leave open and try to start after a short period of cool down. See what happens.

That's the way it seems to go. In the winter, there are a ton of glow plug threads. In the summer, heat soak.

No such thing as "Maintenance" in the "Budget" list.
