How does a non wastegate turbo keep the boost p.s.i. at a reasonable level?

Is it just engineered into the turbine, which means it is non-adjustable?

Or

Is there a pop off valve that opens up at a set boost level?

Or

Is there something else that I am missing.

I had the hypermax turbo system in mind while asking this.

Thanks

On a non wastegated turbo they have very large exhaust housings. This means slow spool, but it also means it will be harder for the motor to physically push them to a point where boost becomes to high. Wastegated turbo's have smaller exhaust housing and need the wastegate to keep the turbo from overspeading as the smaller exhaust housing makes it easier for the engine to overspead it.

Make sense?

Basically they just put a big turbine housing on a nongated turbo.

The hypermax turbo uses a correctly sized turbocharger to limit boost, if you were to modify the setup such as change the turbo you would need to install an external wastegate to limit boost pressure.

doesnt the fuel have sumthin to do with it to?

Yes. But a stock DB2 can only supply so much fuel, and an IDI can only turn so many RPM's. Basically they oversize the exhaust housing to make it so it doesnt overspead.

Yes, more fuel equals more energy which in turn can drive the turbo harder.

Do you know of anyone who has ran in to a problem with too much boost running a hypermax? I heard that the idi can only run 9 lbs. safely.

Thanks

Talk to Dyoung about that... I hear he's running a ton more boost than that. I think with good head gaskets and studs you could run over 15lbs pretty safely.

It's really depends on the condition of your truck. If you just put in fresh headgaskets I would assume it could hold more boost than a 400k mile motor. I had around 25-30k miles on my motor with the turbo running 8-9psi. Last 3k miles have been 15+psi.

I have an old motor and I don't want to pull the heads therefore I would feel safe to run 9 or 10 pounds of boost.

With that said, a non wastegated turbo will not allow me to adjust the amount of boost. Is that right?

If I slap a non wastegated turbo on my truck I am relying on the engineers who designed that turbo not to run too much boost?

Could one put a pop off or blow off valve on a non wastegated turbo?

Thanks
