No longer a lurker. Got a 1994 F250 7.3L IDI

Well, I'm no longer a lurker but an owner of the 7.3L IDI. I'm pretty excited. All of the research I've done suggests this truck and engine will serve me well. The only question I have is the E4OD transmission. I really like the truck and how this becomes my long time companion.

It's currently in limp mode. I'm going to pull codes tomorrow. The truck does have 202k on it and I know it has been overheated at least once. Just not sure if I'm looking at a rebuild/ reman swap in the near future.

My situation was similar and I found the cooler plugged in the radiator. After bypassing and doubling up the stand alone cooler(s) the issues subsided. I did flush the trans fluid a couple of times to get rid of the burnt stuff. Many miles without issues now.

I have drove and checked the fluid after driving and it was normal in appearance and smell

First of all. Where are you located, just the State, Province or Country. That helps to determine what is needed to keep the tranny in good condition. Do you haul heavy loads, are you in mountainous/hilly area?

Now as far as being in limp mode. The things to check, is your Tach and Speedometer working flawlessly? The Tach sensor is mounted on the IP gear housing, the VSS is mounted on the rear diff, remove it and check for iron particles, do the same on the Tach sensor. There is a relay on the drivers side near the firewall, Check the trans. connection on the Pass side, do not pry it up, squeeze the lock tab and pull up, check the connection at the trans shift lever MLPS.

I live in north central Arkansas, which is fairly hilly but not mountainous. I plan to pull 4-6,000 pounds fairly routinely.
The speedo and tach appear to work flawlessly.
Electronically speaking that leaves the FIPL and MLPS, right? The owner before me replaced the shift lever and said it got stuck in gear when the shift lever broke on the person before him. He's no mechanic, so is it possible something didn't get done right there?

On the shift lever, there are three wires coming off that, RED, GREEN and YELLOW IIRC, easy to see, just remove the cover on the steering column, two screws on the underside, check to make sure the colors are matched where they connect to each other, check for bare wire also. With the key ON, you should be able to turn the OD light ON and OFF.
To check the TPS/FIPL, remove the throttle cable on the IP, with a VOM, red probe to the center wire on the FIPL, black probe to ground, with KOEO, adjust it so you have .92 to 1.02 volts at idle, move throttle lever to WOT, there should be a smooth increase in voltage with no dead spot, max voltage at WOT is 4.5.
MLPS is (Manual Position Lever Switch) There is a mark on there that lines up to show Neutral position, check plug connection for corrosion.

Okay, KOEO scan brought up codes 23 and 26.
My book says 23 is TPS voltage out, so this would be an adjustment on the FIPL.
It says 26 is Mass Airflow Sensor or Transmission Oil Tempreture Sensor. There is no gauge for that on the truck (all stock) so does it have one of those? Or is code 26 something else?

That scan cleared the codes, and the transmission ran smooth, then the 23 code came back

Yeah, that 26 code TOT could have come from running it cold at some time or maybe just a stray code, just disregard it.

My truck is giving me this same code and after going through the voltage checks on the TPS, they're all within spec. I'm going to troubleshoot it later this week again because I think it's the reason for some hard upshifting and will report back. Let us know what the voltages are; I'd be curious to hear if they're similar to mine.
