No glow plug relay?

Ive been searching on how to get rid of the GPR. But half the time the thread turns into a mix-up of the solid state controller and what not. So i have a 84' 6.9 and want to put a switch on the dash. How? I read the tech articles to see how to do it but the only thing i saw was the solid state GPR conversion. How does the GPR work??? Can i just use a HD starter relay that is basically what A GPR is correct. Sorry for the noob questions i just wanna be able to drive it when it gets cold.

yep you got it... get a standard ford starter relay and a switch in the dash (I would recommend a momentary switch vs a toggle) and you will be in business. Just remember 10 seconds or so max time or you will take a chance of burning up the plugs.

Thanks for the heads up. So am i sending 12V power to the glow plugs to make them work? I found a 40amp starter swich that is brass that will work fine? Any diagrams on this i would really hate to burn up a brand new set of glow plugs? Thanks for the help argve (and that avatar is amazing!)

here is a little ditty I just threw together... hope it explains it better.

Now the glow plugs will pull much much more than 40 amps that is why you use a relay. So that you have a remote controlled switch per say... the high amperage stays under the hood and does not enter the cabin of the truck.

THANKS thats a huge help. So its basically the same concept as a ignition switch to engage the starter relay; then it egages the starter. easy enough.

That's WAY overkill on a switch to energize the relay, but better heavier duty than too light. The push button is only applying power to the switch terminal of the relay (solenoid) which probably doesn't draw 5 AMP's. Sound like you got it figured out. The solid state system is somewhat of a different beast, hence why everyone was asking you.

The 84 already has a perfectly fine relay, you just need to wire the pushbutton to it. All the controller on the 6.9 system does is switch the power to the relay, no more, no less.
If memory serves the wire you need to hook your switch into is purple. It's one of the small terminals on the relay, the other one will be black and go to ground.
