a while back the original pump with 165K seized up and i put another one on. This one had been rebuilt around 03 and had low miles, i think about 20K.
there was no timing mark where the old pump was and none on the new pumps so all i could do is try to put the new pump on as close as i could to having it perfectly "straight" which i know is a guess. It looks to be in the same position as the old pump.

truck runs just fine, does not smoke at all but is a little harder to start then the old one. Just takes more cranking - and what is strange is that when the engine is hot it doesn't start instantly like with the old pump. it still takes some cranking, sometimes two good one.

i don't know anyone around here that can time a pump - and the local diesel shop doesn't have the tool. Can anyone tell if the symtoms i describe would indicate to much advance or too much retard? If i could at least figure that part out i could make some slight adjustments until i find someone that can time one.

thanks,
paul

Paul, I'm thinking your timing is a bit on the retarded side - you can try advancing it yourself, just take it slowly and do it a little at a time, as too much advance will eat glowplugs.

remember that a little bit goes a long way, just loosening the pump will change the timing. So go in small increments.

Timing also sounds retarded to me. Try moving the top of injection pump towards the passenger side about a 16th of an inch and see if it helps.

Where do you live man? Someone here might be willing to help. Lots of us have some timing equipment. If that's not an option then try to just go in increments of a dime's thickness and be sure to mark clearly where you are now, on the pump flange and on the gear housing flange. Can't be sure what the trouble is with your timing but it seems like it's close but could be better.
