Newbie with an oddball project...Farm Rod.

I just read that passage to my mom (who is NOT mechanically inclined), and her response was "You're gonna need a LOT of antibiotics for that transplant to take!" Certainly an interesting project; hopefully the truck gods don't smite your rig

No antibiotics Just a torch and welder. The guy who made it was the cobble master. Was his daily driver until he fell off of a windmill and onto a parking lot. My grandfather ended up buying it (early 90s) and now I've got $400 left to pay off. Then the it's mine. Eventually it'd be sweet on a 3/4 ton Diesel chassis. It's so ugly it's beautiful.

That'll be one sweet truck when you're done! Do you plan to add creature comforts like Heat/AC/Radio/etc?

I spent most of the day spinning my wheels looking for a new sandblaster hose. Nobody has the right size... except Evco; they wanted $6.50 a foot with a 25 foot minimum!! Thats more than I paid for whole blaster!!!! I really wanted to get something done this weekend, so I am frustrated beyond usual.[/QUOTE]
depending on the inside dia--just get some hose, that has two braids of nylon in it---standard hose is about right. thats what i did. when the end got sloppy by the nozzle, wack off a bit of hose--no problem---cheap to---and much more pliable than hyd hose----hell, mines been on the blaster since it made it--20 yrs ago!!!!!!!!! started with 30 ft,down to 27 now

Not much too see... progress has been slow as I race motorcycles in the desert in a local sportsmans series and we have had 3 races in 4 weekends due to the way AMA had to schedule the nationals. I am plugging along as the old body allows...

Keeping the air cleaner covered until I am doen sandblasting.

The brakes are all hooked up and working for the first time in many years.

I tried using some "aircraft stripper" to see how well it pulled the old paint off; it worked ok but was an awful mess. A good sanding followed by the sandblaster to get those "hard to get into" places seems to work best. My goal is to NOT warp any panels. (Not sure you can warp this IH steel; it is very thick!)

One more race next weekend and i can 100% concentrate on the truck...if life doesn't throw me any curve balls...

Thats going to be real nice. If the front wheels are too wide you may be able to find some old IH school bus or truck front fenders that will cover them. I had a 51 bus that I wish I still had to do a swap on.
And that old iron IS like plate. Thats why they last so long.

I doubt you could warp those panels with anything less than a sledge hammer. I had to help a coworker in knock some dents out of the back of the cab n his old IH. He was outside holding a piece of railroad rail for a dolly and I was inside using an 8 pound short handle sledge and the damn metal still didn't want to give!

I left the front fenders on to do the initial fitting and build out the cab mounts. It looked like the stock fenders would easily cover the tires.

Yep. I am hoping that I have enough hammer for a few of the dents in the back of the cab! It looks to be about 16 gauge!

wow that's one on the nicest cabs ive seen, almost a shame you cut it.... but it is a sweet project! ya can never go wrong with harvester power in a old harvester! (boo on those who use 350s for "hot rod binders") i will have to keep an eye in this. ;p
