Hi guys I'm new to owning diesels and just got a 94 idi turbo. I seem to have a oil leak. Ive alredy changed the crankcase seal. Mines coming from the rear of the engine, down to the exhaust / oil pan. I've read about checking the cdr and valley also the turbo drain lines. I figured I'd check these first before I pay a shop to change out the rear main. As im a newbie. What the heck is a cdr and whats it look like lol! I've also read about punching out the baffle to the drain line or something. Can someone please explain. Any ideas would be great. I'd hate to replace the rear main, when I could have fixed it myself.

Thanks for your time guys

Welcome to OB .
Crankcase Depressurize Regulator, is behind the air filter, there are many ways to put a Road Draft Tube on the engine but most use an adapter to the IP cover and a length of 1" hose. Punching the holes is done when You install a turbo drain on this hole and helps the oil drain faster. There are many threads about this and there is a section called tech section with lots of good info, enjoy.

What do you mean by the "crankcase seal" ?

With the "oil" running down the back of the engine, are you positive it's motor oil or could it be diesel fuel. There is a drain from the valley pan to the rear of the engine, any fluid leaking into/on the valley pan will drain there.

The return oil from the turbo, usually drains back to the oil pan thru the valley pan where the CDR hole is. The factory turboed engines valley pan is made to drain the return oil, no need to punch any more holes in the baffle on the bottom side of the VP. Check the turbo oil return line so it's tight in the grommet in the VP.

I highly doubt the rear main seal is leaking, but it's possible. you would only see oil from rear main by removing the flywheel dust cover which would be covered with oil.

Here is pic of the CDR.

Edit: Re-reading the post, it could be the rocker cover leaking oil at the rear.

I fixed a leak in the front first. But there is still defiantly motor oil dripping down the back of the engine onto the exhaust.... Maybe a oil pan gasket ? The turbo looks good, I dont see any oil coming from there.

These engines never had a oil pan gasket. The factory used RTV. If you find a cork or rubber pan gasket then someone before you installed it. And thats a big mistake. They never hold up and will leak on you....

Thanks for the replys guys. Sorry I didn't get back sooner I was in Montana. Unfortunately the truck didn't fix itself. And seems like the oil leak is getting worse. CRD looks good. Top of the engine looks pretty oil free. I'm thinking the oil pan. Is it just as much work to do the oil pan as the rear main. Should I get them both done at the same time?

1994 factory turbo trucks didn't have the CDR at the rear of the engine, am I right?

Could be a bad turbo drain gasket, valve cover gaskets, loose/worn out oil feed line, oil pressure sender, block adapter to feed oil to the turbo or the rear main seal...

I could be wrong, but am I correct in saying the CDR isn't at the back of the engine?

The factory location is towards the back on the driverside valve cover.

Well my oil pressure sender rarely works. But that wouldn't leak would it? It's just for your gauges right?

The back of the engine has several oil leak areas. The pressure sending unit. The turbo oil supply line. The turbo oil return line grommet at the valley pan. Look at the very top rear of the engine. The valley pan drain leaks any fluid out between the bellhousing and the rear of the engine block. It can only drip off the passenger side way at the back. It usually runs all over the starter. To repair the oil pan you need to remove the engine and do not install any kind of a cork or rubber gasket. Only good quality RTV because nothing else works. Even the factory never used a gasket. They knew what worked. Us a small inspection mirror to get way back behind the engine block. A flashlite may help too. Find the leak sourse before doing anything. Could even be a valve cover gasket leaking. Try to snug up the bolts but do not really crank down on them. That breaks the gaskets. You will feel the loose bolts if there is any......

So it looks like I have oil over my starter. But it's every were on the oil pan. Engine is been cold for days now and you can see it drip off the pan. Oil lines to the turbo have some oil but not the volume that's dripping off the pan. Same with the oil sending unit. It has to be the pan? Doesn't it?

I really thank you guys for your help so far. I decided to really start looking around and do a rad flush at the same time. I bought some GUNK cleaner and sprayed the oil pan. I'm Starting to think that the oil pan is fine. Oil is dripping down the starter so i looked on top of the engine and climbed on top. Valve covers look good but something looked kinda strange. is there supposed to be a cover at the back of the valley? Whats the hole for? when i felt around back there it felt like a second tray behind the bowl thing( were the turbo line returns) is that also used for draining oil? because it was filled with fuzz and stuff
