I just purchased a 93 CC 4x4 5spd w/ a blown IDI w/ Stock ATS turbo. I am heavily contemplating which motor to drop into this truck. I am leaning towards another IDI mainly because they seem to do the best w/ running high percents of WMO, however I have to admit a Cummins conversion sounds fun too!

I'm in Northern Colorado and having a heckuva time finding a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI motor which I could just drop in vs. rebuilding my block. Where might one look for a drop in engine? I checked with Jasper and they quoted me $7500 PLUS Labor!! :rotflmao

Suggestions?

WELCOME!!! Good to see another person from Colorado on here!

I would just browse CL. I know I have a friend that can get one here in Colorado, but it may be a few months. Also not sure on condition.

Is the 6.9 and 7.3 fully interchangeable? including use of the stock ATS turbo setup?

from what I understand yes. You may have to use your accessories (alt, ps, vacuum pump), but they should be the same.

The heads, head bolts and pistons are the only differances between the 6.9 and 7.3 engines. They are drilled exactly the same for the heads and blocks so anything that bolts to one engine wil bolt to the other. The na engines have the same part numbers for al the internal parts... the cam, crank, rods, oil pump, intake meanifols and exhaust manifolds as a example. Now when you have a turbo block 7.3 and not just a turboed engine, the rods and pistons differ from the na 7.3... The turbo rods have a larger bore wrist pin so do the pistons. A true turbo block has a serial number that starts at 1,116,331 and goes up from there.... Anything lower is not a turbo block. Just look at the oil port in the very back of the engine... If its 1/8 inch pipe thread its a non turbo block.... If its a 1/4 inch pipe thread its a turbo block... An easy way to know if the block is 6.9 is they had 7/16 head bolts so see if a 7/16 socket fits... If it does not then its a 7.3 block with 1/2 inch head bolts.... The block serial numbers are found just to the drivers side of the injection pump gear cover... It will say in the sequence either 6.9 or 7.3.... Welcome aboard.. You will have no problems getting help here... We never close...

When you say a "blown" 7.3 IDI what do you mean? What killed it? If you can do the labor yourself and the damage is not too extensive a rebuild might be economical. If it has a hole in the side of the block or is cavitated then it probably is cheaper to source another engine, but short of that you might look into it with the difficulty of finding a used engine up there.

Does this mean that you can drill and tap the 6.9 to use 1/2 inch 7.3 head studs?

well from what have found the 93 turboed ingines producted less horsepower than a n/a 7.3.the n/a producted 185 and the 93 7.3 turboed only made 175.i would just go with a n/a 7.3 if you can find 1 or even a 6.9 if it runs good.also welcome to oilburners

Like JD, I'm curious as to the cause. What happend?

Sorry PZ, tapping the 7/16 to 1/2 will not leave enough meat in the treads for it to be anything I'd ever try. Now if there were enough meat on the block to go to 9/16, that would really be a lot of clamping force. But, I don't know if you could go that far and not get into a water jacket or oil galley.

ford intentionally cut the nuts off the factory turbo IDI. adding the turbo was to "keep up with the joneses" in offering turbocharged truck. ford did not want to upstage the upcoming PSD with the IDI. if you ever driven a PSD in stock form, you will hate it. there is no bottom end grunt for a stocker PSD.

What did they do to it???

:dunno

Was the HP decrease on paper only, or was something physically done to the motor?

I know my rig has the original injectors (they still have the grey paint)
Time for some typ4's?

Calibration of the IP and a restricted downpipe is what limited the HP. We fix that kind of problem around here all the time. LOL.

That's not entirely accurate. Engine ratings ranged over about a 30HP spread, depending on where in the country the engine was sold, and what altitude the target market was. A high altitude 7.3 turbo could very well be rated for less HP than a sea-level 6.9 NA, but a sea-level turbo 7.3 could have spanked a high altitude 6.9 no problem.

smaller turbo outlet and teamster modified downpipe.
