I recently installed my new gauges in the truck. Yesterday I was towing the boat up over a small grade of 1500 ft. Id say 6% was max up hill. the EGT gauge was up to 1150 at the top of the hill. Now this is a 7.3l NA truck. Why so high??? Seems a bit high for a factory stock NA engine. I was burning 50% WEO if that matters. Only difference I could tell running WEO is the black smoke when passing someone. Oh and the 30% drop in fuel economy.

Interesting, I still get 18-22mg on 100% WMO depending on driving style - but I'm now turbo'd. Haven't taken my EGT out for a hard spin yet so I don't know what my egt's are.

Do you heat your WMO? Right now after about an hour of driving at highway speeds my heat exchanger gets my wmo to about 110'F - my electric inline heater is offline until I get a now alternator. This could have an effect on fuel economy. When were your injectors last done? My are brand new BB codes - I also start and stop on #2 with a healthy dose of DK.

Have you turned up your IP? The black smoke you see is unburnt fuel as I'm sure you know.

1) Nope no heating it... just like diesel... ambient temp. Will this help??
2) AFIK never, only 40k on the engine
3) nope its all stock... old timmer used it to tow small trailer to the coast and back
4) yup yup... I figure the addition of my turbo this week will help this. No plans of crainking the IP for little while after install

i would say that is not to far out for a NA truck, mine was that high before the turbo to. i was surprised to see just how high it was all that time.

Wouldn't you like to know
When my pump was crancked up too much & you were ******* it with a load or getting on the highway I could just roll the smoke out & hit 1100* in a hurry. See how it does once the turbo goes on....:D

This is something that others have noticed with N/A trucks as well. EGTs can indeed go fairly high even on the stock settings. Thats why we always advise some one that wants to turn the fuel screw up on a none turbo to get a pyro first. There really isn't that wide a safety net for EGTs in a stock IDI once you start really making it work. If a pyro is not available, smoke is the next best thing to monitor. Anything more than a slight haze in the side mirror is the signal to back off or limit the high power run to only a few seconds.

Oh and Cat Rebel, you will love it.......

yes, I was thinking the turbo might help cool it down. Now when i crank on the screw, then things will be different.

Absolutely right.;Sweet This is why I really think all diesels should have a pyro, stock or modified.
