New F350 purchase - but its' an automatic - advice on servicing the tranny please ?

I just bought another truck
1991 F350 w/7.3 IDI - ATS turbo - crew cab
160,00 miles
Same owner for (11) years who babied it
He could of been my brother ....

Only thing I don't care for - automatic tranny :dunno

It has a 4:10 rear end with a FOTZ*7V00*LRM automatic
with overdrive button on the dash - transmission was replaced
60K ago in 1999 by Ford along with processor assembly, tachometer sensor,
tripminder assembly.

He added a tranny cooler with a dash mount temperature gauge.

The shifts are hard & quick but that is without any trailer
or towed load.

I am planning on having the tranny completely flushed, filter changed,
fluid replaced before putting it into service.

Would you recommend draining the tranny, installing a new filter
and fluid, do a complete flushing, drain a second time and put in
a second filter ?

That is what I am planning to do ...

Also, what tranny fluid to use?

I like Royal Purple diff oil, I run 85/140 in my 4:10 rear end
on my 1990 F350 now so I was thinking of maybe putting
Royal purple tranny fluid in .....

If you don't know - I tow ;Really

Thanks!

Jim

No need to farm the job out. Changing transmission fluid is fairly easy. I've done it in my driveway. The instructions have been posted, long ago, but I lost track of that. I have them in a word doc, a bit long to paste in here. I can PM them to you if you'd like. They're labeled as being for a '99 Superduty, but the process is the same.

At the same time I'd suggest changing the filter, and changing to a deeper pan on the E4OD, one with a drain plug.I have part numbers for that too.

Thanks Ken

Thanks Ken,

I do my own service on my trucks but I was planning on completely
flushing all the old fluid out, especially if I went with synthetic tranny
fluid .....

Once he finds out the truck you're coming to get is a bolt-action, you might not leave with it.

That's a real beauty! Nice find. Congrats. Love the trailer too. I don't own one, but borrow a 2 axle and have never had anything bigger than standard cab models on it. It's not a gooseneck so loading is a pain, and you have to be sensitive as to where on the trailer you put it.

i would add a secondary filter, perferably a simple remote mount oil filter style. those in pan filters are more like screens with a pick up tube.

i second the deep sump pan/one with a drain plug. while u are in there, make a little clip to hold the end of the filter furthest away from where it goes into the valve body. sometimes the filters wiggle loose and cause a sluggish-then-hard or no reverse.

Good previous owner ...

I am in Nashville, TN today ....
I just had enough time to change the oil & filter on the new truck
and take it for 100 mile test drive.
I left it at a friends house in CA.

I have been looking for a few months, as you guys know it is hard to find
a well cared for IDI with relatively low miles.

This one has the deep tranny pan w/ drain plug, a tranny filter with
rockguard installed under the truck, supplemental cooling fan at
the radiator, coolant temp gauge.

I really want to completely flush the tranny out - the only way to
do that I know of is by a power flusher at a reputable shop.

Also, what do you guys think about Royal Purple tranny fluid?
