A few years ago I used Royal Purple synthetic ATF in a 90 IDI ZF-5 and had great results. No more morning 2nd-3rd grinding from it after that. I have yet to try it in my current automatic though.

You should do great with the RP in there. Might want to get some auto RXand throw it in and run around for about a thousand or so miles before you do the change to get the seals ready. IF you are about to drop a fortune in fluid, I would hate to see you drop it on the ground.

No fancy $2500 transtech machine needed to flush it out. Drop the pan and change the internal filter, do whatever external filter adding you are going to do. Remove the return line where it comes out of the rad cooler or last coolers section before returning to the tranny and attach a nice length of hose to it. Find a 5 gal bucket and measure off 1 gal increments in the bucket. From here you will need a helper or have to be quick on your feet. Poke the end of the aforementioned hose into the bucket and top off the tranny with fresh fluid and have someone crank the engine , watch the fluid level in the bucket and have them stop the thing when it hits the 1 gal mark. Top off the fluid in the tranny, crank the engine again till it hits the 2 gal mark, stop again, etc, keep repeting this process till the fluid running out the return line is clean new fluid. You have then flushed out the whole box including the torque converter ;Sweet You will need to have much more fluid on hand than just the capacity of the tranny since some of it is going to be lost to flushing, but considering that you are saving the price of the service and you will actually be getting ALL your expensive RP in there instead of it getting mixed all up with regular dino fluid which is what would end up happening if you took it to a shop with a transtech machine

the shop i take my bronco (E4OD) to for tranns flushes is a bit different.

1. drain everything
2. fill with flush fluid. this is just really heavy detergent stuff that is used only once.
3. run machine to circulate for 15 minutes or something. it takes a wile.
4. drain detergent into one container wile sucking from a new container.

they never pull the pan and don't change the screen in the pan. i run an external filter and have them put a new one on before running the flush stuff and a second one on after all the flush is out. it's a napa/wix fluid power filter.

Update .....

Thanks for all the tips

Good idea to change the fluid out & filter and run that about
1000 miles to see if there are any leaks so I don't waste
money on Royal Purple leaking out ..... :D

Well, I put my ' new truck ' into service yesterday,
driving about 450 miles from Rosamond, CA to Phoenix, AZ

No tranny problems but my wiper switch started a small
electrical fire under the dash & caused some excitement

I was cleaning the windshield, went to shut it off and the
switch came apart - blew out the fusible link on the passenger
side wiring harness behind the battery (had to pull the battery
and open the harness) but I was prepared ;Sweet

I had dealt with a blown fusible link on my other truck
and installed fuses blocks with blade fuses & cut out the
links - that was on my ' to do ' list for the truck

Its' gonna take some getting used to driving an automatic,
but what hell

Thanks guys for the advice ;Sweet

DO NOT GET IT POWER FLUSHED!!
I dont care who has ,or has not had trouble, everyone that I know that has had it done has lost the trans inside 2 months.

It should have a drain plug on the conv, if not either flush it with lots of fluid thru the coole r line or leave it alone.

I thought trans fluid and filters were good for 100K, if he babied it, im sure it never got too hot so it should be good to go for quite a while i would think.

I agree w Russ. Drain the pan,and torque converter and change the screen. Install a trans temp gauge while you are in there. Get a mag hytec pan then fill w Mobil 1 synthetic oil(about 5 bucks a qt cheaper than RP).

WHat ever don't forget the convertor lock up switch. Then double up with 2 heavy duty trans coolers. Nice trailer - I bet it does better on fuel than my gooseneck did.

trans fluid is 30k mile rated for normal stuff. but one session of overheating can kill it.

If you have a ford dealer build and installed transmission from 1999, I think you will be ok with it. I can't promise steel planetary carriers, but it will have the roller bearing center support and had BETTER have the later sprags, and higher flow front pump. Firm shifting tells me they set it up properly in the valve body too so it should be good to go.

I'm not a fan of flushing either but have no personal experience so take that with a grain of salt. All I ever do is drain the pan and torque converter, then refill. I'm also not sure the remote mount filter is really needed since the OEM filter is already fairly decent and it BETTER have a magnetic inline filter on the cooler return line since ford warranty requires this. Seeing that filter there is also a good omen that it was professional job.
