NEED PART, HELP. Bent axle

Hey guys,
While working on my grandpas truck, the one we rolled, we noticed one rear tired looked a little cockeyed. Well one of the axles must have been bent in the rollover.

I dont know what rearend it is, but its not the DANA full floater like what all my other trucks have. This one has a light rear with no hubs sticking out.
My bro wants to just put a new axle in it. Its the drivers side one.
If you know what rear this is please let me know cus I dont.

Actually, since its an 83 its probably a Dana 61 or Dana 70. All those other trucks probably have a Dana 80 or Ford 10.25. I have a Ford 10.25 that you could drop in there with some modification that I would let go cheap, complete with axle shafts and oil bath seals, but the shipping to Nebraska might kill you. Let me know,

Hey JD, thanks for the offer.
We have 2 Dana 80s like whats in our other trucks sitting around, but they arent 3.73's like whats in the truck and it has to match the front gears or 4 wheel drive wont work.
Shipping would kill from there, but thanks anyway.

I forgot about the gears matching thing...oops! Just thought I'd offer. How about switching gears in the front to match the D80? I don't think they can accept 3.73s, only go as low as 4.10 right?

the rear in the picture is a ford 10.25 semi floating axle it has a 'c' clip that holds the axle in the other rear your talking about is a full floating axle with the bolts on the outer hub that holds the axles in

Ok I am not sure but it sounds like you have a semi floating axle, of what type be it a Dana like the one in the auction link or a Ford Sterling I am not sure.

Please look here http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml this will show you the different rear ends and you can clearly see there is a significant difference between the Ford Sterling, or the Dana.

Ford did use both types of semi floaters, more than likely yours as early as it is is a Dana.

Just a though you may want to consider is if the axle is bent, the housing may be bent as well. You would do well to find a good reputable shop and have that checked out thoroughly. If you put a good axle into a bent housing your setting yourself (or who ever drives the truck) up for a axle, bearing or carrier failure due to the stress' involved.

If you can take out both axles along with the carrier, replace carrier caps and can access a very long straight tub that fits through the complete housing, you may indeed be able to see if the housing is bent.

You'll have to ensure that the tube, or bar that you use has no deflection.

Imagine if you will, a specially made donut x2 that fits into the carrier bearing spot held in place by the bearing caps. Now that donut has to be machined perfectly with a hole in the middle of each that the bar stock or tubing just fits into. Pass the tubing into the donuts (already installed in the diff) and once the bar/tube is completely through the entire differential, you should see that the bar/tube is perfectly lined up in the middle of the axle ends of the differential. This method is the surest method as well as simplest one of checking for a bent housing.

are both Dana axles, not a Dana and a Sterling as mentioned elsware in this thread.

riotwarrior is correct they are both dana in picture i didnt see the rear cover until i expanded it they used that style dana in 80 -84 pickups then went to the sterling or full floating dana i think they used that semi floating dana in vans until latter

The truck in question has a semi-float Dana 60. Both semi and full floats were used in the F-250 depending on GVWR.

I would suggest replacing the complete axle with a full float, or another semi float. It is likely that there is more damaged than just the axle shaft itself. You could also use a 10.25 axle out of a newer pickup (not cab/chassis as they are narrower). Any pickup truck axle from 1980 through 1997 will fit.

(Edit, I hate to have to say it, but a lot of the axle information in the above posts is incorrect. Dana axles are easily identified by a number cast into the front of the housing near the center).

It does say (something)-60 on the front center housing.
Its not the axle shaft thats bent, there's a bend in the hub itself.
you can turn the axle and watch the hub and theres one spot where it wobbles and then runs straight.
