The parts truck I bought was a bear to start. I assumed it was air because it sat a lot. Compression test showed me why it was a bear to start. I'll just say the compression was low enough, I woundn't have needed a diesel compression tester.

If you've got it to cough a couple times, I'm surprised it hasn't started.

no reason to get pissed at anyone but yourself :D
if you buy a truck that does not run, that's exactly what you get.
if you listen to the person that's motivated by money, he will tell you that its laced with gold!
you must understand you bought a non running truck.
if I buy a truck in this condition(which I have several times)
I tell them to let me hear it pop.
if they cant provide me with this, I lower the price!
this is how I bought a 1962 ranchero for 600 bucks instead of the grand they were asking for,
turns out he didn't know what points were and he never heard it run.
but told me it ran.
a 100 dollar ignition, and I drove it for 3 years.

If you have fuel at the injectors, but no smoke of any kind, I wouldn't be looking at timing or anything like that. You need heat, air or fuel. One of those three is missing. Focus there. For heat, plug in the block heater. For air, yeah that's an easy one, because surely you've made sure the intake is clear. As for fuel, pull a glow plug and make sure it is wet. if it's not, your IP may be weak or injectors might be stuck.

it should start on ether .. even with low compression ..

like IDIBronco said .. pull start it if it's a stick shift ..

Wanna bet? Mine would NOT start on ether. Just cough and spin a little faster but thats it. It refused to run until I got a new IP and bled the lines with a new fuel pump. And it has a blown headgasket.

Well I tore the front down, its in time. No keyway sheared or anything. Checked lift pump, its good. Got fuel going through the filter and to the IP. Not enough going to injectors. Pulled a line off and got a little drizzle when i turned it over. Nothing like it should be. I have 12v to the FSS. Could it be bad?
I found an IP for 400 which isnt bad.
Just dont have 400 as of right now.

You need atleast 200 RPMs for it to start. Ether will get it to do something if it can do anything.

If its starting like this, it will not do anything but kill your batteries.

It needs to start more like this:

Not how quick it lit off but the starter speed. Notice how the new starter kicked hard instantly and not dragged like the previous video?

With a blown headgasket it can idle like this:

Thats after 10 years of sitting, water poured in everytime it rained, Rusted intake, etc... These engines are literally bulletproof and not much can go wrong with them. I wasn't a believer until recently.

Mine sounds almost identical to the first video

Yeah, You've got bad cables or a bad starter. That was about 100-ish RPM. Replace both and try again. At least the starter. Best thing is if the cables are factory or been "modified", Spend the $100 at oreilly and get a new set made in America and try it. Still does it, Get a starter from the JY if they're cheap and try it. 6.9 and 7.3 starters are identical so ask for either one. Try and get a gear reduction if you can. You can tell the difference. One is "Direct drive" and the other is OSGR. DD is just a straight motor where as OSGR is just what it is called. Offset gear. Motor is higher then the stator gear. If it works, there ya go. If not, Take it back for yard credit and tell them it doesn't work or doesn't spin fast enough. 8 out of 10 yards will do it. They'll just wipe the fingernail polish off they marked it with when you bought it and put it back out for sale.
But, If after both those options and it still does it, You may have bigger problems....

I put a new, not remanufactured starter on it first thing. Not saying it couldnt be bad. Ive definitely had bad parts before. Ill try cables next. In the mean time. What could the bigger problems be?

Anything really. Lets try the simple things first. Pull the starter off and check the connection between the starter housing and the block. Thats how it makes the ground back to the battery. Check your cable ends. Make sure ALL connections are clean and tight. I haven't seen a completely new start for a 7.3 so its probably a reman or rebuild and just didn't tell you. Not saying it isn't possible. What shape are your batteries in? While it is possible to start these engines on one battery, its not good to. If you have weak batteries and factory cables, good luck. I replaced my POS cable, "new" starter, and pulled a battery out of my 6.0 truck. You saw the results. When I first got this truck is was "Just get the cheapest thing so it'll run." That was a year ago. Don't cheap out. Get good parts once and not cheap ones you have to buy over and over thinking your saving anything. Only thing you're saving its the kids job behind the counter that doesn't know conduit from the cloth rings you put on top post batteries........Don't ask. It happened to me last night.....

I only see one battery. You NEED TWO batteries that are in good condition. These starters pull a lot of current.
