N/A 3" exhaust.. opinions and input please

So my crew cab has this new diesel truck restricted cat sound when im pulling hills... 20feet of 2.5inch exhaust is taking its toll on the flow.


at my local exhaust shop i found this Gem.. 3inch in and out. 27inches long. did not take a diameter measurement.

id like him to make me a 3" Y-pipe and run this muffler in the stock location. i wouldnt mind a 'front of rear tire' dumpout

but cannot on the crew cab. anyways i was thinking this style muffler with a full 3" system would still give me enough back pressure

to keep low end power and enough flow to help top end. here are pics

On my 93 I have true dual pipes into twin flowmeter 40 series. Sounds good but has a rapping at high end. Hope this helps you out.

Should work out. Worst comes to worse you can just drop the muffler and straight pipe it if you really hate it.

Yeah I dont want a straight pipe. Sounds like crap and you lose power. Im trying to find a muffler that flows more but produces some back pressure. I have no idea the brand of the exhaust but I know its not a straight through design but its obviously a heavy duty high displacement muffler. Maybe motorhome?

or school bus. If you had a 3" straight pipe on your crew cab long bed truck, having all that exhaust length with bends would be fine without a muffler, I dont think the truck would lose power. I say this because I drove my truck open y pipe for a while when I couldn't afford an exhaust for it, I didnt notice a loss of power, and that is no back pressure at all really, except the stock 2.5" y pipe. It may end up being to loud for you, and sometimes they can border on horrifc for sound quality, so I am with you there oppinion wise, just some people like them straight piped.

That looks a lot like the first muffler I had put on my truck. It killed my power! They cut it off and put a flowmaster on it and ut runs well. Pretty loud around 1800 rpm.

If you look through the muffler is there two pipes with a gap between them?

i cant see it now.. only the pics i posted. thanks alot. by the pics yes it has 2 pipes. i have this 3" single in and out flowmaster....

dont mind the wasp nests. theyre flow R&D guys

In my opinion, on a NA application the Y pipe is more importantant than anything. The only good one I've seen is Banks (long discontinued I beleive) I picked up 1 mpg just going with it and a straight through 3 in muffler and pipes. The Y has to really be a Y not a T. And even then the left exhaust manifold outlet is a little suspect to me.

thats exactly how i feel about it. ive been looking at exhaust and only find stock 2.5inch or 4inch. i feel a 3" or maybe 3.5 would be ok. i do not want it to be LOUD or lose power.

i put a banks sidewinder exhaust on a previous NA truck. stock y-pipe.. adapter from 2.5 to 3" to 3.5" after the muffler. it was loud and i lost bottom end power.. what i gained in the top end did not make up for it. i kinda regret doing that.

doesnt hypermax still sell there 3.5? its stock y pipe back but I remember it sounding oh so sweet. As much room as these trucks have underneath, why not have some speed shop bend you up something nice?

i got a stock 04 Dmax muffler 3.5 in out. Pretty quiet, has a nice diesel tone at 1800 rpm when cruising. picked it up for 40 bucks. Much more low end vs straight pipe.
Seriosuly..who designed teh T pipe...Im considering cutting mine and making my own Y pipe, just some 2.5 cut on an angle and profiled with a dremel to fit. Before i swap to a ...cummins...
