well my buddy got the truck torn apart today. tranny is completely perfectly fine. thats the great news. bad news is t-case is destroyed. pump seized and twisted the mounts off. planetary is worn the hell out and really sloppy. to the point where its what was making the grinding growly noise not the tranny. shift fork broke an ear off... its a mess. i didnt realize how hard the 1356 was to locate. a local junkyard might have 2 that are manual shift. hes gonna find out tomorrow. other good news is since the tranny was out and truck was on the lift i found the oil pressure sending unit and finally put the new one in for my new gauges!!;Sweet. now... one thing that has me concerned. i can rotate the clutch assembly about half an inch on the flywheel. it doesnt move around, just rotates. is this normal with the DMF??? or is that the next thing i need to worry about?? it drives and feels fine. any ideas?

Sounds like your dual mass flywheel is worn out. I have an extra bw1356 here at the house if you cannot find one. Mine is a manual shift. I am glad to hear that you got off lucky on your transmission. Transfer cases are normally much cheaper than tranmissions.

Towcat posted some info on this a while back, I think 3/4" is worn out and 1/2" of play is ok.

Somebody else will chime in but I think your DMF is OK.

My friend had the pump go out on his 1356. He didn't find that out until after he had replaced the transmission though. He scored another t-case from the junkyard for $40 and then had to put his old transmission back in since the "inspected" unti they sold him was a POS. Thats what the 30 day warranty is for I guess.

our transfercases have an oil pump? is that why the fill plug is so low?

yes they do and the screws that hold the anti rotation wing back out and then the pump rotates , rips off the rubber hose to the pickup screen then there is no lube oil being pumped thru the shaft ,and this is vital for life.
Mine let go in the middle of south dakota, on vacation:mad: didnt know what it was at the time, I ran the case in 4hi with the hubs out most of the way home which probably saved it cause the chain was slinging oil. It went out a couple months later.
