Just thought I would share my new water separator setup. I installed this last Saturday and it has been working great so far.
Basically, my old Racor water separator needed to be replaced, mainly because some of the plastic parts on the unit had deteriorated and thus I had air seeping in slowly. I was also having trouble finding Racor filter replacements for that unit, I purchased them from more than one company and both times the filter looked old and one was even rusty. I made the decision to just replace the water separator all together given the situation I was facing. I originally planned on putting in a new Racor unit, but after learning how much they cost, I decided against it. I also considered the Napa head w/Wix filter that some people here have done.
I ended up calling thedieselstore.com, whom I have done business with before(with an excellent experience). They recommended to me the Stanadyne FM100. I decided to go with it mainly because the whole unit(Head + filter + clear bowl) came out to just over $100 shipped. That's about half the price of an equivalent Racor unit. I haven't heard of many here who have installed this unit, I know it's not as common as many of the alternative options.
The unit itself is actually highly configurable, they sell accessories for it such as a heater, primer, water in fuel sensor, even a lift pump. I just bought the basic unit, a head with 4 3/8 NTP ports (other sizes NTP ports are available), a 30 micron filter and the clear bowl. Given the price, I think it's a great setup and should suit me well for what I need.
The filter isn't the traditional spin on type, it is a push on filter held in by the plastic retaining ring that locks it in place. Below is a pic of the unit itself. It is a close fit, but it works. Both the line in and line out is on the left hand side, with two plugs on the right side for the unused ports. Each side of the head actually has both an in and out port (4 total ports), so it can be adopted for different configurations. It bolted right to the mount on the firewall that is there already. As can be seen in the photo, there isn't much space on the right hand side of the unit. The truck is running better than ever now and I am happy with how it turned out. I don't know if I will stay with the 30 micron element or not, I might move down to a 10 or 5, but I haven't decided yet.
