minimum CCAs?

I'm pretty sure the batteries need replacing but to be sure I need some numbers first.

Batteries read 12.6V. While the engine's cranking, the amps through the positive cables read about 390 A at most. I've heard somewhere that the CCAs need to at least be the size of the engine and diesels need more. I'm not even reaching my 6.9's 420 so I'm kinda worried. The batteries are supposed to have 625 ccas and 725 ccas at 0 degrees, I think. The 625 is a 3 year old Diehard Gold and the 750 is an Autocraft Silver bought last July. They're both charging and I'll give it another shot when they're ready.

Does this sound like they need to be replaced?

Sound like they need to be replaced 3 years is old batts, You can go get them load tested to be sure.

YES, get those tiny things outta there. Go to Wal-Mart and get 2 of their 1000cca for about $65 each. And hope that trying to start with those little puppies has not ruined your starter. If you do end up needing a new starter, come back here and we'll tell you what/where to get it. OkieGringo

Is the only way to test the starter is to take it to Napa or Carquest? Are there any other ways to know if the starter's shot? Sounds? Anything? Sometimes the starter sounds like it's spinning and not grabbing the flywheel. Had the starter tested a few months ago at Pepboys and it checked out fine, could have changed since then...

Sound like the starter is just not getting enough juice to fully engage. Go get new batteries first. Then we'll know. Remember the K.I.S.S. Principle. Now get going to Wal-Mart.:draw OkieGringo

I really don't know about a core charge, but they do charge you to dispose of the old ones, so I doubt it. The OEM batts were 850s but the 1000s don't cost any/much more. Your engine/starter will like the extra amps. Why are you STILL here, get yer butt movin'.

I don't have them, just reporting what I've seen over @ TDS. But even if they last 3 or 4 yrs, it's a great deal for 1000amp-ers.

What's the brand name on the 1000 amp batteries?

I think I've got Interstates in my truck now...IIRC they're either 750 or 850 CCA, but I'm at school and can't check at the moment. I paid about $100 apiece for them, so $65 for higher-capacity batteries is amazing. The batteries are 4 years old now, and while I need to load-test them before going any further, I'm willing to bet that they're getting close to the end of their lifespan.

But, I also need to re-do my glow plugs and replace the starter (again ), and might look seriously into redoing the cables (as I kick myself for not swapping battery cables before I sold my old van) as well...

a new negative cable will cost me about $20 a piece but I don't know what your driving. I need another negative cable as well. Not sure about the positive cable's price.

Can't buy the batteries. No $$$$. Sucks but nothing I can do about it until I get paid...

What he said. I did this on my old van, and it worked out beautifully. I took some marine-grade 2/O cable, ring terminals (you can use a big screwdriver or a chisel and a BFH to "crimp" the ends on if you don't have the proper crimper), and these adapters, and made them myself. It wasn't cheap; I think I paid about $150 for everything...but, most of that price was in the cables.

I just wish I had swapped this cable setup to my truck before selling the van
