What kind of mileage are you guys getting out of your 6.9 and 7.3 Diesel engines.

What does IDI mean. I'm totally new to these thing. I'm wanting to learn the lingo. Thanx.

IDI = In-direct injection.
My 88 F250 supercab 4x4 auto (no overdrive) usually gives 12 around town and a few more on the hwy. I baby the **** outta this thang.
Bought it new in 88, still looks and runs great...great truck. Just wish it had OD tranny.

When I had 4.10 gears I got 20-21mpg empty on the highway at 55mph, it went down a lot if I sped up. Towing was around 15-17mpg at the same speeds.

Now that I have 3.55 gears it seems like it will be about the same mileage at 65mph empty (haven't run a full tank empty yet, so I'm guessing) and I got 15mpg towing on the last tank.

I get 17+/- on highway and 14+/- in town. Some times my foot is a little heavy so I think I could get better. Need to let her breath better with intake and exhaust mods.

my f450's never saw better than 10mpg
my f350 CC best was 14. This is driving off the governor(3400 rpm) and going no slower than 80 mph(2800 rpm). I have a lead right foot...

Norm, you asked about Moose Stang milage. I've only got one reading so far, and that is 15.1mpg. I think it will do better on average. I get 20 with the Moose Truck which is far heavier, but the OD and manual trans gives a distinct milage advantage. The C6 is a good transmission, but not known for maximum fuel economy.

11 to 12...11 to 12...no matter what I do. Always has, I just filled up and got 12.2 and I've been trying to ride with a lighter foot. Towing it goes down to about 10. I think this is the first time I've ever gotten better than 12.

My '91 F-250 SC 4x4 with 5spd and 3.54 gears is also a cream puff with only 50,000 original miles has since day one returned 17 Imp mpg in city and a best of 22 Imp mpg on the hwy driving no faster than 90 kmh (56 mph). These are under ideal conditions. When towing a 6500 lb rv trailer it usually returns 13 Imp mpg. It still has original injectors, pump, and has had routine maintenance. Good truck but not what you would say "good" on fuel especially if you are lead footed.

With a T-19 and a naturally aspirated engine, I averaged 14 to 15 mpg. After adding the turbo, the mileage dropped to 12 to 13 (was lower at first due to the fun factor, but even driving conservatively, I could never get above 13). After swapping the ZF5 in, the lowest I've gotten was 15.5 (towing 7K lbs worth of car and trailer behind the truck) and the highest I've gotten was 20.6 (driving 55mph down a flat highway), and I average 17 now.

Overall average is 14.998 mpg over a course of about 31K miles (10K miles with the turbo, and 6K miles with the tranny) and about five years. This is with 4.10 gears and stock-size tires. Oh yeah, and my tailgate remains up at all times unless a load requires it to be down.

:cool
