Wow, what a story!! Wish I knew how to play with them...but alas I suck at small parts... so I can't even do a stock build let alone anything else!

I paid $32.80 for each injector,
++++++++++++
Martin told me today that the advance curve is what really wears on those pumps, especially at higher altitudes (like here in Albuquerque), and causes them to slowly drop off in performance.
+++++++++++++++++++
I've come to realize that if there was a good reliable way to make more power with these old trucks fuel systems, there would be more people doing it. That fuel injection pump was on TONS of vehicles for many years, so I'm pretty sure somebody would've figured out how to hotrod it years ago if it was easy. Same goes for the injectors...
Ryan /QUOTE]
Ryan,
$32.80 outright I assume....not exchange?

These pumps do wear & get out'a calibration etc....power curve, torque, setting, And there's more to calibrations than just turning the fuel screw......or whatever things that I have no idea what they are.

I do know that some kind of "HotRod" tweaking can be done to these things with stock stuff.....like pumps & injectors tweaking, etc, & they can be made to run like a scalded dog!! Scarey!!!.
I don't know what "Bubba" or "Dave" or what ever his name was, but "Bubba" did it to mine once back in '93-'94.
I was back in Dallas, Tx where I originally had my turbo installed & was needing my inj & pump gone thru (don't remember for sure, but I recall Turbo Specialist on Regal Row....doesn't matter now.)
They had done 3 rigs for me & we got along great. Back then I ran tons & tons of very heavy loaded miles & the rigs were set pretty strong.
Anyway, it was last day before shop closed for Xmas & they very busy. Told me to pull pump & inj in their shop bay & they would recal everything.
(Ahaaaa, the good 'ol days....They also would let me watch & ask questions back there in their "clean room" while they did all the secret stuff)
Got it all done, settled up with them, left as they closed the doors.

When I headed up the on ramp to I35 & showered down on it, I instantly knew I was in trouble....that thing blew a road full of smoke, kinda hunkered up in the middle, went to quivering & shaking & tires gnawing at the ground...even the front tires & it's 2WD! Pyro jumped to 1250 & 14-15 psi....a Screaming Demon!!!

Short of it all...I had to head back to Oregon with a really big Gooseneck load..."Light footed" it all the way watching gauges, goosebumped & nervous all the way. Called & talked to them first time they answered the phone. Said "bring-her-back"....
Several months later I got my pump recalibrated at another shop....they told me "it was set exactly double to specs"....I don't know. But I do know, I got just as good fuel mileage & had way in excess power as long as I drove it right & didn't let anyone else drive it. But if I tromped it, the pyro jumped up, fuel gauge dropped, & the road & cars behind me got oily & sooty from my fuel dumping out'a the tailpipe.....
Later I was back to Dallas & the story was that "Dave" had decided to quit them 2-3 weeks before he told anybody & he must'a been pissed or something....
I always figured he must have cost them lots of $$$ because they gave me a new inj pump, did lots of free work on my rigs for couple of years, etc.

I don't know what he did to make her run, but wished I did!!!

Yes, that $32.80 was for NEW Delphi injectors outright, without any core charge or exchange. I agree about the pumps- they can be tuned to turn a engine into a molten pile of iron if you want to. Its all in the guy doing the tuning!

I'm pretty happy with the DPS Pump and my stock Delphi injectors at the moment. The truck runs great. It started so nicely this morning, and didn't fog the neighbors house with diesel smoke at 6:30 when I left for work. Maybe someday I'll hear from Ken and get the Stage 1's fixed, but at least the truck runs for now.

I'm hooking up the trailer tomorrow for a Mini-haul. Really, I'm moving an old Mini Cooper (like 69-70?) for a friend. It won't be a heavy load, but we might get a chance to get the turbo spooled up!

Yeah I got the new Delphi BB injectors as swell, they seem good, and I was encouraged by your results Ryan. I might get the Ken's DPS pump to go with it. If I do, I think I will send him a running core and keep my stocker as backup. The funky spray pattern on the Stage 1s just has me thinking that you're giving up something, either increasing emissions, wasting fuel...something. They'd probably have me back to the 12.6mpg I had been getting with my "D" code standaynes or worse.

Hauled the mini without incident- the truck pulls well, and has tons of power to spare with such a light load behind it. Never saw EGT's over 1050, including pulling a 15% (yes, 15%) grade in 3rd gear at WOT just to see what would happen. The posted speed limit was like 30, and we were considerably higher than that.

Now to strap the 'crawler down to the trailer and see what she's made of!

Just wanted to add on to Ryan's support of Martin over at Central Motive Power. When I did the heads on my wife's truck last year, I bought brand new Stanadyne injectors from him for basically the same price as the Delphi's Ryan got. However, I bought the IP from another company since I could get it almost $100 dollars less and have it delivered to my door in basically the same amount of time as them rebuilding my old pump. Then I had CMP set the pump timing since I didn't have access to a meter. I was a little skeptical that they did it correctly since they mostly work on newer trucks, and the fact that Carla's truck still did not have the power I thought it should have (it's NA though) afterwards. Well last week Ryan came over with his new MT1480 to check the timing set by CMP and it was dead on. So hats off to Martin at CMP where I will be doing ALL my fuel system business in the future.;Sweet

The problem with this thread is that Ken does not have the possibility to come and debate bc if He does there will be too many angry guys (with their own reasons) and I don't think that is the way to handle this anyway. Still it is good You advice against it so others wont have the same problem. Bottom line is, if You don't want to wait long then go ahead and buy them some place else. I talked to Ken a few times and He really is helpful, and good to talk to. I think He is overwhelmed with all the demand and that is when the quality drops a notch. I would not like to wait 3-5 months for some injectors and IP either to have them fail when I install them so I buy them some place else. Maybe He'll get a hint and either improve both service and quality or grab a little less so He can concentrate better on one thing.

I wouldn't call the attitude in this thread or any of the other threads complaining on the lack of response from Ken as being mean spirited at all. Disapointed? Yes. Without a doubt. Ready to lynch him? No. IMHO, I think this thread would be a great venue for Ken to explain his side of what's going on in his camp. It is possible for him to turn this around by explaining himself here.

I don't think He'll post an answer, but maybe He'll do something about it since this is not the first post complaining about He's service and that is too bad because I don't know many shop's doing performance parts for IDI's at least online. As I said before, when You start to grab too much then the quality is the first one to fail. As for the attitude maybe I didn't explain it right but I have the feeling if so many guys complain about He's products or lack of speed He'd rather solve it personally with each one and not on a forum. Still I agree to the fact that is better to stick together and let every one know about some shop defects and virtues.
