Measuring turbo shaft play

Can someone describe how to measure correctly turbo shaft play? I put a mag base on the GP controller mount and used a dial indicator on the tip of the shaft. I measured .017" of deflection. But the indicator has to be angled into the inlet in order to reach the shaft; so it doesn't seem like the measurement will be accurate. How is this normally done?

Also, I ran across this while looking up how to check shaft play. I know very little about turbos, but is this guy serious? My turbo has no where near this much play. Mine can barely be seen with the naked eye.

What a **** poor video. No matter what.. Those turbos are shot to hell. Our bushing bearing turbos run on oil. So when they are shut down you will feel some shaft movement but. What you looking for is the runout in and out that really matters. Once the oil is flowing the shaft is picked up on an oil wedge. Same thing happens with the rods and main bearings. I think your fine but please ask Mel or Russ. They are the turbo guys here.

Ahh, that is much easier to measure. I'll have to check that. I thought it was the deflection that indicated the bearing condition.

Yeah, I don't see how in the world the turbos in that video would spool to 20K with that much movement. It's got to be a joke, or there's more to the story.

My turbo is working great, it's that I just spent about 30 minutes staring at it while I had my hand pretzeled under the turbo removing GP #7 and started wondering. The good news is that I found the PO installed 8 Berus *with anti-seize* and they all work!

Your turbo spins upwards of 120,000 RPM. A mere 20,000 is not going to give you any boost. Just saying. These turbos really spin. At 120,000 rpm its doing 2000 rpm per second.. Woozer...

If you really wanna check it, you should do it right after shutdown.
That way it'll still have oil pressure on it.
